We had the good fortune of connecting with Anastasia Rutkowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anastasia, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up north of Boston, in the seaside town of Swampscott, MA. After losing television privileges at a young age, I discovered the beauty of Jane Austen, Louisa May Allcott and the playfulness of American Girl Dolls. Films were still allowed and led to family marathon viewings. I was always putting on shows for family and friends (whether they wanted to watch or not) which lead me to pursue a career in performance and writing. I had an immense amount of bottled-up creativity and with the invention of the laptop and Final Draft, I finally had an outlet.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve come to learn that there is no one path to success, you have to be malleable and open to change. When I lived in NYC I was a nanny who wrote and tried to act. Moving to LA opened up what it meant for me to be working and surviving in the arts. I applied to a job as an assistant at a Talent Agency, it was one of the hardest years of my life, but it allowed me the skills to then go be an assistant at a small production company, where I thrived! I was promoted pretty quickly to a Creative Executive and I had the opportunity to work with writers on a day-to-day basis and help them develop their scripts, which has been insanely fulfilling and inspiring in my own writings. I’ve also put myself in a place to meet people and the opportunities from that have helped me grow. I also found a job that pays me to read… 8-year-old Anastasia is screaming with delight at that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I moved to Silverlake and truly life changed. It’s so vibrant here, I can walk to all the great places on Sunset, I used to live in NYC and was missing that feeling of not being constrained by a car, Silverlake affords me to this! I recently went to Bodega Park, their breakfast sandwich is out of this world. The Lavander Latte at Terre Mia is my favorite coffee.

I love browsing any bookstore, The Last Bookstore, Skylight, Stories, Book Soup, chances are high that you’ll find me in one of those.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Parents, would be absolutely no where without them.
