We had the good fortune of connecting with Khadijat and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khadijat, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
It’s only a risk if you’re going to lose something and I never feel like I’m taking a risk because I genuinely believe I cannot lose. If things don’t go as intended or however I’ve planned, another door will open even greater than my initial vision. This mindset and this unwavering belief in myself has helped me keep my mental peace as I pursue my musical career. Going down this path altogether is risky because of societal norms and community expectations, but to me the “risk” is half the fun. I’d bet on myself any day of the week, any hour of the day.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My songs are a form of self-adoration, so it also excites me that people, especially women feel motivated, encouraged and confident when listening to my music. There is so much power in positive thinking and how you feel about yourself. Finding a way to keep or come back back to this mindset is a key lesson, and through creating my music, I’ve realized that mastering oneself is a difficult challenge, so I want the world to know that your relationship with yourself is a top priority.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Before covid I would’ve been with all the moves, now I’m just about good eats and vibes (and a few moves) , so we will be at the following places: Baquiat’s Bottle (bomb jerk chicken nachos and the best blood orange margarita), Cafe Erzulie, Fingerlicking and Flavors. Now you want your hair braided so we go Harlem and see Adama Zorome ig (adamaafricanhairbraiding)
She got you looking right and just in time for us to eat again!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my mother and father, Yinka & Jaffe Dania. The path I am paving for myself is not traditional, but you both believe in me and encourage me to fulfill my heart’s desires. I have always felt limitless as far as what I may achieve in this lifetime because you both taught me and exemplified the limitless God we serve. I am grateful everyday to know that I am loved by the both of you. Everything I am is because you two are, I can never thank you guys enough!
