We had the good fortune of connecting with Andra Tashjian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andra, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
LunaKai Lash is the first in the lash industry to have sustainable bamboo products to replace single use plastic disposable supplies. It is our mission to reduce the amount of plastic and bring awareness to our Earth’s plastic waste problem and how we can make a difference in our lash room. LunaKai Lash has replaced your everyday single use plastic, such as mascara wands/microfiber wands, with sustainable bamboo handles. Our packaging contains no plastic and is completely recyclable and biodegradable. In 2020, I won 3rd place in The Skin Games, an International skin and lash competition, in the Compassion Category. This was a $3,000 prize that was donated to our favorite non-profit, The Ocean Foundation. We also offer reusable, N95 masks, which in March I donated over 650 to our frontline/first responders during the Covid-19 crisis.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a wife and a mommy of two beautiful children. I have been an Esthetician for over 5 years, and fell in love with lash extensions. When I am not lashing I am spending time with my family. We love to travel all over the world, whether it’s snowboarding in the mountains or scuba diving in the most beautiful oceans. However, through the years I have seen the loss of sea life and have become quite aware of the impact on our oceans due to the daily single use plastic we use each and every day. I have a big passion for our ecosystem, especially our oceans and the future of our coral reefs. The oceans are our Earth’s life support. They regulate our climate and support the greatest abundance of life on our planet. For this reason I knew there needed to be a change. A change in our way of thinking, a change in our beliefs and a new vision with new products for our future generations. As the owner of LunaKai Lash, I have researched and have found organizations that support the research and rebuilding of our coral reefs. In 2019 LunaKai Lash donated 10% of sales to The Ocean Foundation for their research of coral reefs. We have given all of our T-shirt profits to adopting coral, 5 and now we have created custom, bamboo lash pallets with an artist in North Carolina and all of the profit from them will go to Coral Restoration and regrowth. We also teamed up with Get Outdoors Nevada to host community clean ups each month. This has been a great way to involve locals to join together and clean up their city.
This journey for me is just beginning. The time involved in creating and promoting a new business is extremely time consuming and expensive. This has for sure put pressure on my family to step up and be less ‘dependent’ on MOM to do things for them or just ‘keep house’. Well, they have stepped up for sure in every way and have been my biggest supporters. My husband was skeptical at first, but he has become my rock, and I am so appreciative for his blessings.
I am still working on the ‘lessons’ involved in taking time away from family and putting too much into the business side. I try and stay up late or get up earlier than everyone to create social media posts, research, or just engage with my peers. I still carry guilt of not being 100% mom.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Las Vegas is a playground for adults, am I right!? Being a local here, it is fun to get the occasional visit from a friend! My favorite place to go off the strip is the beautiful Lake Mead. My family and I go there on beautiful Vegas sunny days to paddle board and swim. Another beautiful place off the strip and to ‘beat the heat’ is Mt. Charleston. The lodge there has yummy food and drinks after a gorgeous hike. You would never know you were 30 mins from the LV strip! Before the pandemic, our favorite things to do were to go see shows and concerts. Las Vegas has amazing talent performers on the strip and some of the best venues to see your favorite band play. We look forward to those days again soon!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Being in The International Skin Games was a game changer for me. Not only did I find the most supportive women in the industry, but I grew so much as a professional lash artist. In 2020, this organization bent over backwards to make sure that the competition was going to happen safely and professionally. Jennifer Moore-Rosenblum has lead a successful group of women together to offer support to one another and life long friendships. She also created a virtual world called ‘Esthetics World Campus’ an online world where she offers key note speakers, education, engagement from the safety of your own living room. She is a true entrepreneur.
