We had the good fortune of connecting with Andre Robinson (Know as DJ Deaf Tunez) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andre, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Since I started becoming DJing in 2015 and I realized it takes a lot of time to build your business and my brand. It’s understandable that take a lot of time to make it work if I want to stay consistently. I have to go out meet new people, giving out to my business card to stranger. Making my own mixes, meet DJs, promoters, checking out their events and vibing. It’s important that we have to think outside of the box as DJ. Starting my own DJ business is never easy, we have to go through the challenge, mistakes, good, bad and ugly which me to growth. Now I’m in my 9 years and my business is booming.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of that thing that when I was a teenager, I tried to figure out what kind of person I wanted to be because I thought that I had limited my hearing loss as a Deaf person. I wanted to go to the NBA or the NFL, but I wasn’t good enough to be an athlete. After I graduated from High School, I attended college at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf program, which is part of the Rochester Institute of Technology for Business major. Once I started, I realized that a business major wasn’t for me, and I began to admit that I enjoyed helping people and mentoring first-year students; that made me feel that I wanted to be a counselor or social worker to help get what people need. That’s why I got my BA degree in psychology at UMass Dartmouth and my MA in Social work at Simmon University. What helped me to keep it going? One of my vocational rehabilitation programs from the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission helped me pay for school to attend college. And you know what they said to me after telling them I will attend UMass Dartmouth? They said, “Andre, you know that many Deaf students usually participate in mainstream college and fail to reach their goals. And you, Andre, you will fail too.” She said in front of me and my parents. You know what I did? I use the quote to motivate me to prove them wrong. That’s helped me to keep it going. Is that easy? No, it is not. I am the only Deaf student attending UMass Dartmouth and Simmons University, and I had to make sure to get the access I needed, which included sign language interpreters and notetakers. I also attend tutoring to help edit my paper, which helps me be successful. But yes, I had been struggling with school, the final paper, professor discrimination, etc., but I’m still here. I’m still using that quote to help me expand to get more opportunities, which means becoming a DJ and Deaf comedian. Thank you to vocational rehabilitation for motivating me to prove them wrong and to know that Deaf people can do anything. I have two degrees, a full-time job, DJ Business, and networking around as a Deaf comedian and social worker, soon to be a therapist in the future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
They’re a lot of different thing that we can do in Boston. We can go to Puttshack, Dave and Buster, Museum of Arts, Bowling, etc. Again they’re a lot of different thing in Massachusetts. If new food spot to try, we can to Estella, Savvor, Grace by Nia, etc. Lastly, If you want to find a good spot where to dance and vibes then you have to follow right DJ. Beside, I know where the spot that can people vibe with. I have been and raised in Boston and I had been exploring around the city and trying new things. Once you come my visit and need tour assist then I got you.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout to my family, my team, mentors, closest friends and people I work with is incredible. I want to each one of them that help me to keep it going and continue accomplishment to do what I love. I want to shoutout to haters who expect me to see me fail. Thank you for motivation me to prove them wrong. I won’t be doing this without them. Thank you.
