We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Freund and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrew, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This isn’t really a question I subscribe to. There is no other option than to keep going when it comes to your career. Obstacles are constantly thrown my way daily and it only makes me work harder in order to achieve my goals. Difficulty builds character and thick skin which in turn helps fuel ambition.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My road to becoming a television host was a mix of hard work, determination and a little luck. Most people have to start out in smaller markets and work their way up. I started out working for a national outlet and was able to skip some of the primary steps that a lot of people have to do. I will never forget this and will always be appreciative for where I came from and the people along the way that championed me.

My job is not easy and it never will be. I am grateful for this because if you have time to rest on your laurels you aren’t aiming high enough. As Oprah says, “You need to dream a bigger dream for yourself. That is the lesson. Hold the highest vision possible for your life and it can come true.” I truly subscribe to this idea and use every challenge that occurs as a learning experience.

What I want the world to know about my story is that Im just getting started…

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Los Angeles. We have some of the most amazing restaurants, bars, museums, architecture, concert venues (and people) on the planet. When people come to visit I like to first take them to bomb ass Mexican food. LA is famous for some of the best Mexican food in the world and one of my favorites is El Coyote. El Coyote has been around since 1931 and is an LA icon. We would start there and then head over to the Hotel Bel Air for cocktails. The ‘Bel Air’ has nightly live jazz and the best martini in Southern California.

I would also want to take a visitor to experience a concert at the best venue in the world, The Hollywood Bowl. There is nothing like packing a picnic and seeing an artist perform at the Bowl and sometimes they even have fireworks!

Also no trip to LA is complete without a visit to Disneyland. It’s your chance to becoming a kid again and have all those childhood memories come flooding back at “the happiest place on earth.”

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My career on television is really attributed to 3 people that helped me get my start. The first is Melinda Wood. Melinda was a publicist on a film I worked on as a producer’s assistant. She saw something in me I didn’t necessarily see in myself. Melinda introduced me to a television producer at FOX, Mike Waco. Mike Waco gave me a shot covering events and film premieres. He also assigned me major interviews with actors and musicians that helped shape my specific interview style. My camera person for most of these shoots was Hugh McChord. Hugh is the best shooter I have ever worked with and also the most patient. I was still learning when we started working together and Hugh took the time to show me the ropes in order to become the best journalist I could be.

I will forever be grateful to Melinda Wood, Mike Waco and Hugh McChord.
