We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Valdivia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrew, what do you want your legacy to be?
Legacy isn’t just about reputation; it’s the tale that goes beyond our time. Too often, the industry is fixated on what people think right now, ignoring the story that will define them in the long run. My ambition is simple: I want my legacy to echo the journey of a passionate creative who shared wisdom with anyone ready to listen.

I’ve always admired the idea of being a Renaissance figure or a modern-day Robin Hood (much like Leonardo de Vinci), empowering individuals with skills, regardless of their experience. Personally, my career journey has been nothing short of remarkable! I’m incredibly blessed to collaborate with some of the world’s most illustrious entertainment figures, who I’m proud to call friends. However, fame isn’t my pursuit. I aim to be remembered as a guide and a helper.

Currently, I’m fully committed to several initiatives aimed at helping people acquire creative skills while avoiding the mistakes I’ve made. It all began with my podcast, the “So You Want To Be Creative Podcast,” where our mission is to equip creatives with the insider knowledge needed to navigate the industry while spotlighting influential creatives making a unique impact.

Additionally, I’m in the process of writing a book slated to be released next year. This book is geared towards mentoring young creative entrepreneurs in honing their skills and building their businesses. Learning the skills of being able to speak and understand both the world of marketing and business is something that I think should be taught to everyone.

If these initiatives alone define my legacy and how I’m remembered, I’m confident that I’ve lived a fulfilling life and have made a lasting, positive impact by inspiring others.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Art is a profound wonder for me because it serves as a canvas for the diverse perspectives of humanity. It was this profound exploration of how others perceive the world that initially ignited my passion for photography, marking my first foray into the world of creativity. As the years unfolded, my creative journey expanded to encompass a multitude of talents: painting, strumming the guitar, molding pottery, weaving words on paper, and more. Amidst these creative odysseys, my most renowned skill has remained photography, a craft that resonates deeply with me.

My affection for all forms of art is rooted in the reverence I hold for how each artist curates their unique creative narrative. Art transcends the confines of a finished piece; it unravels as a profound journey that takes shape in the creation process, whether through the stroke of a brush or the composition of a melody.

My brand, ‘a story,’ revolves around nurturing the growth of others by imparting the techniques and skills required to craft art while witnessing the evolution of their distinctive styles. The essence of the “So You Want To Be Creative” podcast isn’t merely in spotlighting the finished works; it’s about illuminating the trailblazers, the creative minds working tirelessly behind the scenes. It’s a platform dedicated to unveiling the intricate processes of artistry.

My own path to creative growth was paved with missteps and the observance of other artists’ workflows. In today’s age, being a creative artist is more accessible than ever before, but it remains a journey marked by resilience, adaptation, and the unwavering pursuit of one’s unique artistic voice.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is so many different things to do in LA, but any great trip to LA involves these five things (which just so happen to be my favorite things to do). Firstly you have to visit one of the many amazing coffeeshops in southern California (Highly Likely, In-Sit, Maru, Blue Bottle, Community Goods) that is an essential activity.

Next activity would be catching a good view of the skyline and the 6th street bridge, I personally love to go to the rooftop of a certain little membership club to see it (but there is a bunch of places all around LA). Next would be the beach, my most favorite beaches in LA have to be in the south bay. There you can catch some of the best sunsets you will ever see, and parking and traffic is so much better than going to Malibu.

Lastly you wrap the night at any of the amazing street taco spots, or the night markets. There is a lot of different spots but my personal favorite has to be the El Sereno Night Market. It is always a vibe there!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There has been so many different people & factors that have contributed greatly to my success. I will narrow it down to one person, one book, and one youtube channel that continually inspire/encourage me.

First and foremost, I must acknowledge my best friend, Justin Avila. He radiates positivity, serving as a constant source of inspiration and encouragement, not just for me but for countless others in his orbit. Justin possesses an array of skills and talents that one could only admire, but it’s his remarkable acceptance of others and his unceasing commitment to creating opportunities for those around him that truly sets him apart. I’ve had the privilege of crossing paths with many individuals, but Justin stands as one of the most remarkable souls I’ve ever encountered. The hidden secret to sustaining success over the long haul is cultivating a strong and supportive community, and Justin doesn’t just embody this ethos; he’s also the architect of an incredible community called ‘Goodmood,’ where kindred spirits converge. I owe a significant part of my current position to Justin and the vibrant Goodmood community.

Next up, for the avid readers and aspiring entrepreneurs out there, a book that fundamentally altered my perspective is ‘E-Myth Mastery’ by Michael Gerber. This book is an absolute must-read for anyone venturing into the world of business. It doesn’t just delve into the nuts and bolts of business structuring but also unveils the most efficient pathways to operate. (Another gem worth mentioning is ‘Tools of Titans’ by Tim Ferris.)

Lastly, one of my go-to sources of insight and knowledge is the YouTube channel ‘Colin and Samir,’ including their second channel, ‘Creator Support.’ What sets them apart is their unique podcast-style video format, which is incredibly educational. Their interviews provide a behind-the-scenes look at some of the industry’s most accomplished content creators and producers, offering invaluable insights into how they crafted their illustrious careers.
