We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Edme and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angel, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
If you told me that I was going to be a Content Creator a few years ago, I wouldn’t have believed you. I was trapped within my own body. For majority of my life, I didn’t see myself represented in a way that was perceived as beautiful, confident and strong. Plus size people are usually the butt of the joke. And even though I was always surrounded by the most loving friends and family, it led to such insecurity and a low self-esteem. I remember growing up and not always being able to fit into what the other kids were wearing and what was deemed as cool at the time. I found myself finding different ways of styling the clothing that I had access to, and finding joy in dressing up. As an adult, I did a lot of soul healing. The journaling, the praying, the words of affirmation, they all lead to my growth in confidence and self-love. There was a period where I was posting singing videos for fun on TikTok, and I found that there were a lot of people asking me where my clothing was from. I wanted to help those people find stores that spoke to them and their personal style. It led to me, making random fashion videos on TikTok, and it grew into something that has now become a career of mine. In a world that is so broken and cruel, I feel like a self expression like fashion is such an amazing outlet. It’s also a way to outwardly express who you are and to walk into a harsh world in confidence and comfortability. What I’m doing is helping people discover who they are and I am in a way allowing them to release the person that is trapped behind who society and media says they should be. I do this speaking on inclusivity, on confidence, giving tips on how to style clothing, where to find clothing in your size and I love every bit of it. People are healing, finding their personal style, finding their confidence and finding their joy
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
If I’m being honest, you are in the minority when you are black in the content creator space. Then I, being young, black, and plus size. There are not a lot of people in the fashion space that look like me. I’m always mistaken as a crew member or writer. There is nothing wrong with that but I find it interesting that I’m never guessed as a content creator. I also predominantly focus on streetwear, and of course, inclusive sizing on both ends of the spectrum. Something that is important to me, is closing the gap between being plus size and straight size. I think that it’s important that plus size people aren’t only seen as plus size people. Being plus size is just one fact about me. I say this to say that straight size people should be able to pull inspiration from plus sized people regardless of their size. I think that is reflected within my content. I am a creator that anyone can pull inspiration from.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is so much to do and see in NYC! You can truly make anywhere a good time. I would definitely bring them to The Edge to overlook the city, Evelina for brunch, and Orchard St for shopping just to name a few!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to thank God for using me to touch the heart of others. My parents for always supporting me in my endeavors. My friends London & Brandon for always being a listening ear. I also have to shoutout the book 100 days of Believing Bigger by Marshawn Evans Daniels. The devotional truly changed my life and my attitude towards my journey.
