We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Westerman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
To do better! Asking the question “There has to be something better than this, right?” led me to Dependable Daughter. I managed assisted living communities for over 10 years and found that incontinence products we used were not very good. They leaked and caused health issues. After researching I found there were premium products out there, but few people knew about them. I found most healthcare professionals working with older adults didn’t know there were better products. How can family caregivers or older adults learn about options? I wanted to educate professional caregivers, family caregivers, and older adults. I wanted them to know that leaks, skin rashes, and infections aren’t something they have to accept and deal with… they aren’t simply part of aging. I’m an extremely rational person and carefully evaluate important decisions like this one. This time I was so excited to make a difference, I simply took a big risk and jumped in the deep end.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our focus is giving back dignity and improving wellness. If you try shopping in a store or on Amazon, there is no one to help you choose the right products. We have been caregivers and understand the challenges. We are here to listen, ask questions, and guide clients through this journey. Our process starts with a free consultation, then we ship samples to determine the right fit, comfort, and absorbency. Once we find the right products we ship them directly to the client. I’m the most proud when I client tells me they have waken up dry, or felt confident while going out to a movie and dinner.
Our biggest obstacle is that clients don’t know better products exist, so they aren’t looking for them. I had a great solution and thought it would be in demand. I quickly realized it is hard to sell a product that no one they want. So I had to start with educating. I started meeting with professional care teams and speaking at senior events. I give talks at senior living communities and support aging non-profits. My mission is to let older adults and their loved ones know there are better options.
We care and strive to give back dignity, make caregiving easier, and improve wellness.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I haven’t been able to go for awhile, I excited to send a day at Glen Ivy Hot Springs now that they are back open. Such a great one day trip.
Glen Ivy Hot Springs is great for any occasion. A relaxing day with your significant other, girl’s trip, or my favorite… mother-daughter time! Dare to do the hot and cold plunges, cover yourself in mud bath, soothe muscles in mineral pools, or relax on a floaty in the pool. They have a surprisingly delicious restaurant for lunch. You can also book spa services. And don’t forget to pay extra for the Grotto experience.
We like to book a hotel after to relax after a day of pampering!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t have taken this leap of faith with the encouragement and support of my family and friends. My children, Tyler and Allison, are my biggest supporters and encourage me to grow professionally and personally. My partner, Ron, pushed me to take the risk and encourages me when I start to doubt. All my wonderful friends continue to encourage me and celebrate the small steps forward.
