We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Auer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angela, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In the midst of the pandemic I found myself contemplating my mental health and my true happiness. Was I feeling satisfied with my work/life balance? Was I happy working for a big company?  I started to evaluate the risk vs. reward of being my own boss versus staying with a large company with a slow climb. I also asked myself if the profession I was in would be sustainable if something devastating like Covid were to happen again.  Being an esthetician during the pandemic was a tough job to have….I was on unemployment most of 2020. Keeping myself healthy mentally and physically was difficult. It was a lonely time, and very depressing. A friend turned me on to Deepak Chopra’s 21 days of Abundance meditation. I started with that, which really helped me focus on a more positive,  daily outlook.  After that I did a free 3 day manifestation workshop with Manifestation Babe (Kathrin Zenkina) on Instagram. I started to envision what I wanted. As much as I love getting to know my sugaring clients, there was something missing there.  I wanted to help people on a more personal basis.  My vision included helping and healing others, as well as having a flexible schedule so I could travel often. I continued with the manifestation plan by signing up for a 5 month program. During this time I also got my Reiki certification and took a crystal healing workshop through Auralux. You could say that 2021 has been a journey of healing for me. I took the leap to open my own business in April of this year, and though absolutely terrifying, I felt confident in my choice. The hardest part was convincing myself that I could do it.   It has been a huge learning curve, but I am so much happier and balanced now. I’ve taken 4 short vacations this summer, which would have been impossible before. I love my freedom!

What should our readers know about your business?
My business is called Sugar and Chakras. I have been a licensed esthetician for about 5 and 1/2 years working mainly in sugaring hair removal. I have also incorporated Reiki energy healing into my practice. I received my Usui/Holy Fire 3 Reiki Master certification October 1st-3rd. I also incorporate crystals into my Reiki sessions, and sometimes into my sugaring sessions if I get an anxious client. On October 11th I am excited to be starting Community Mondays. I will be giving away one free Reiki session per week in studio every Monday. Everyone deserves healing, and I love that I can give back to the community in this way.
My business is new, but I have so many ideas! My vision is community, a place to gather and heal. Starting a business was not easy, but I learned to put my fears aside and let it happen.
Anyone can do it! As long as you have a vision and start taking steps toward that vision, there is nothing to fear. What I have learned to live by is this quote: “Whatever is desired by you, is destined for you”.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Must see spots in the city would be Griffith Park Observatory for a view. Places to work out with a view: Culver city stairs or Kenneth Hahn, also Palos Verdes trails by the water. Malibu. Beach volleyball in Santa Monica followed by a large Big Wave at Big Dean’s. Breakfast we go to Coffee Conservatory for an iced latte, then hit up The Pan for lemon pancakes and biscuits and gravy, or Gjusto for an amazing quiche. Lunch would be Bay Cities for a Godmother with everything, or El Tarasco. Happy hour, the Lobster in Santa Monica, Elefante or Misfit. Dinner at Jinya Ramen or Scopa, the key lime pie at Fishing with Dynamite.
Sunday farmer’s market in Mar Vista to get the freshest tomatoes and vegan cheese spreads, as well as Dave’s Korean.
Papa Cristo’s for a gyro and homemade sour cherry yogurt.
Santa Monica Pier for cotton candy and ferris wheel. Venice skate park
Dodgers game simply to eat a Dodger’s Dog and drink beer while making paper airplanes….somewhat watch the game.
Live music at the Seventy7 Lounge, or a game of pool at Melody Bar and Grill
Find an art walk.
End with Fly ‘N Lion playing live music at Hinano’s and dancing our asses off.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of my biggest inspirations for starting my own business is my friend and filmmaker, Jennifer Sharp. She was dreaming of travelling back to Mexico to film a movie for years, and she finally made it happen a couple years ago. She started with a vision of what she wanted, no MONEY, and let the universe take care of the details. Secondly, I would have never taken the leap if I didn’t have the support of the Manifestation Babe Academy program by Kathrin Zenkina. There were over a 1000 people in this program in February. We all supported and encouraged each other through our healing journeys. Many of us took our own leaps into the unknown, whether it be entrepeneurial, breaking old mindsets, leaving toxic relationships, etc. I have grown so much because of this group!
