We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela + Silvia Mortez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela + Silvia, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
As we started planning our own wedding and searched for alternative vendors we realized the lack there of and were surprised. Especially since we live in Southern California you would think there would be more open minded businesses. So we decided to create our own alternative wedding planning business specializing in offbeat, unique, and themed events back in 2013.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We started this business at the ripe age of 24 and felt like we weren’t taken seriously until around ages 28-30. We had no prior business start up, no one in our families were business owners, and at that age we had no friends that owned a business either. We had zero business education, or any college background for that matter! We both went to a vocational school out after high school to be pharmacy technicians and were both currently working in retail pharmacy when we set our dreams in motion. Not only were we young when we started Rock n’ Willow, but we were in a small corner of the wedding world catering to Goths, Punks, and Sci-Fi themed events so we hard to market the heck out of ourselves to be able to be seen and compete with the others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are both South Bay locals but Long Beach has our hearts. The eclectic neighborhoods and inclusive residents always bring us back, especially for client meetings. Our favorite spot is Rad Coffee and Lola’s Mexican Cuisine.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We were heavily influenced by Rock n Roll Bride Magazine and Offbeat Wed (previously Offbeat Bride) but as two young females starting a business in their 20’s, we had zero family members who we business owners so we definitely need to thank Cynthia Puleri from Sprinkles n Stuff who mentored us on the business side of things.
