We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelica Zuenko and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelica, what inspires you?
I am inspired by the mystery of life. I am inspired by the psychology of the human mind. I am inspired by story-telling and creating something greater than myself. I am inspired by nature and spirituality. I am inspired by music and the way it prompts me to move and feel. I am inspired by strong emotions and deep conversations with friends or strangers. I am inspired by everything around me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been performing for almost 20 years, and I can say that the stage is my second home. When I’m performing, I can show a side of me that I can’t necessarily show in my day-to-day life (although I do try sometimes haha). Growing up I was told by my teachers that I had the right features for ballet career, and I was accepted into the Quinte Ballet School’s professional ballet program at the age of 12. This meant moving away from home to live with host families and in dorms for the next 6 years. Afterwards I continued my education at the School of Alberta Ballet and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. However, in my final year I struggled with a severe eating disorder and ultimately had to leave.
Initially there was a loss of identity, but I didn’t allow myself to be sad for long. After recovering I quickly discovered a new passion for acting, as I loved the idea of creating truthful moments on film. A few years later, I was introduced to the wonderful world of circus, and this prompted me to combine aerials with my passion for dance and creating characters. My goal is to create a touring company with this premise in mind.
I think what makes me stand out as a performer and creator is that I don’t hold back – I am not afraid to fall, be embarrassed, or make a mistake… So long as I am connecting with the audience and sharing my truth, I am in alignment with the moment and my soul’s purpose.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favourite thing to do in LA is watch comedy. I love stand up and improv, so Upright Citizens Brigade or Groundlings is my go to. Afterwards I like grabbing a burger from Original Tommy’s or Shake Shack.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thank you to my parents and family for believing in me and supporting me when I needed it the most (and when I thought I didn’t need it).
