We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelique Calvillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angelique, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Dedicating my childhood years to music didn’t feel like a risk; it was a lifestyle. It seems cheesy to say “music chose me.” However, my first professional recording was at age 6, my intense studio training kicked in at 14, and I was signed to a major label by 17. It really did feel like things were just rolling out before me and I was simply walking the path.

Then, failure. Oh, the deep sting of failure! It’s so good for you. When you understand the stakes that failure presents, you become a more conscious risk taker.

At age 21 I moved to Nashville, TN. You could say that was the first big risk I took. I was leaving my home base and all my friends and family in Los Angeles to pursue another musical world. I learned so much from being there, but also from the leap itself.

It feels like my whole career choice is one big risk. There is always that element of a gamble when you choose art. I’ve had family members ask me “Do you still think you’re going to make it?” Or my favorite: “Still at it, huh?” Those are four syllables and a head tilt that no doctor ever gets!

I often study inspirational people just to keep myself in a positive mindset. At the end of the day I would much rather give art and music all I have than to let fear get the best of me. To paraphrase Napoleon Hill: the woman who stays persistent discovers that “Old Man Failure” finally becomes tired, and makes his departure.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We all grew up loving Disney movies. Yet, most healthy adults mature and start choosing age-appropriate content. And then there’s me: “Beauty and the Beast, anyone?” I’m a fanatic for Disney Animation.

Enter: The “Princess Geli Vibes” album.

Princess Geli Vibes are my fast and furious one-minute covers where I take a Disney Princess song and remix it in an unexpected way. It features 14 covers, (one for each princess,) in chronological order. The album is out on all platforms and I am so excited to be sharing it.

I’ve teamed up with Blaze Bratcher: an incredible watercolor artist who does artwork and animations for each song. All the action is happening on our instagram pages where we are slowly unfolding the series week by week! It’s been an amazing collaboration and experience; my inner 4-year-old is living her best life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love quaintness, so we have to start with the Rose Garden Tea Room at the Huntington Library in Pasadena. It’s in the center of a magical rose garden, (swoon!)

For an elegant city experience, Perch is a rooftop restaurant and bar overlooking the LA skyline. When the sun sets over the city, it’s truly breathtaking. Some nights there’s a jazz band playing. It’ll make you feel quite classy. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents deserve a ton of recognition and credit. The two of them were the ones who mentored my sisters and I in music. When we were young, they were our first teachers. (They are both amazing musicians, so I was spoiled right out of the gate.)

As I got older, they put more mentors, coaches, and eventually producers in my life. It takes a village to raise a child and I certainly had a fabulous one. Growing up in church was a big part of that. I had wonderful leaders who taught me to sing from my heart, (not just to impress people!) That was hugely important for me to learn during those egotistical teen years.

I am so grateful for each and every mentor from my 5th grade drum teacher to the Grammy award-winning producers that would later shape me as an artist. There’s a long list of people to thank.

Yet it all started with my two parents, Marilyn and Greg Calvillo, encouraging me every step of the way.
