We had the good fortune of connecting with Angie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angie, why did you pursue a creative career?
Unfortunately, it’s a career that often gets overlooked or underappreciated, especially in the visual arts department. In my opinion, pursuing a creative/artistic career is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling things I can do. When I paint, I feel like I’m at my peak in self-expression while also telling others a narrative through my work. And as long as there is someone who continues working in this field, there will be future generations who will get inspired and pursue a career in this field. As the saying goes, “Find a job you enjoy doing and you never have to work a day in your life.”

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a multidisciplinary artist who mostly focuses on narrative-based paintings, specifically touching upon mental health. As a first-generation Colombian in America, the topic of mental health in Hispanic communities has been overlooked or ignored for generations, and I seek to change that taboo. My work consists mostly of oil painting and chalk pastels on canvas.
The challenges I’ve overcome and still to this day are doubt whether it’s self or from others, doubt is easily the most prevalent and recurring challenge to face. What I tell myself usually is that doubt (especially from others) is just them projecting their insecurities onto you. As long as you focus on your work and effort, you can overcome those obstacles.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m located near NYC, and what I usually do is head over to local galleries, specifically a Chelsea art gallery crawl. Many notable art galleries are located in close proximity to each other and feature multiple fresh and contemporary art pieces.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I would like to thank my first chain of command, which is my closest family, friends, and colleagues. My parents, Mr & Mrs. Cardona-Romero. My Professors at NJCU, specifically, Department Chair Martin Kruck, and professors Dennis Raverty, Sara Wolfe, Michelle Doll, Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern, Gallery Director Midori Yoshimoto, and a special thanks to Professor/mentor Hugo Bastidas for all your guidance and support have been invaluable.
