We had the good fortune of connecting with ANGIE & GINO SCHENONE and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi ANGIE & GINO, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Determination, I believe that is what made us get to where we are right now. Having a clear picture of what you want and just going for it with a positive attitude and getting it accomplish.
We always wanted to own a business, for over 20 years we talk about many ideas but really didn’t focus or believe in them enough. In 2019 we had the opportunity to help out in a fundraiser and offer to make alfajores. 5 years before that day I was determine to make the softest alfajores just as I remember them in trips to Peru. I had the recipe just needed to adjust it to get to it’s perfection. My family was very proud once after many attempts and it became a hit in every gathering that I would share them. Never did I know I can make a business out of them. Well on that fundraiser was when it hit us….We notice the huge demand and the very little competicion. We then notice how even a person that has never tried them just loved them….suddenly we visualize our business and since that day all has been coming together.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We make the traditional alfajor which is name traditional because of its authentic taste found in latin America.
We also make alfajores in different colors that kids love, in letters perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, baptism or just an I❤U. We have our 8 inch cake Alfajor or our 9 inch heart cake, a perfect delicious surprise for any occacion. You wont find this creations in any market. We have dipped in chocolate alfajors and we make a delicious coffee dulce de leche.
The alfajor is alot of work, from beginning to end, its a very delicate cookie. A few times I have had thoughts of quitting, of course I was very tired, but my amazing customers with their loving text supporting our business have kept us going.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Ventura Harbor Beach. We love this place. We would rent a boat, they have many restaurants and shops to visit. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Pops Creamery for giving us the opportunity to have our product inside their shops.
JamWest for helping our business grow and taking it to the next level.
Old Town Newhall Farmers Market for giving us the opportunity to be part of their successful Market, having our alfajores get more exposure.
All my customers, for loving our alfajores and letting them become a tradition to their families.
