We had the good fortune of connecting with Ann Golumbuk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think most people that know me would say I have a spicy personality but a very kind heart. In my new body of work, I am exploring my own nature and the nature of society, it’s vocabulary, and it’s expressions. My new collection is salty, lighthearted, fun, and expressive. In my series of “Badass Sticks,” you will find titles like “Sex, Hot Love, Rock and Roll,” “Badass,” “Do Epic Shit,” “I am Women,” “Let’s Get Lit,” and “But Did You Die.” Other pieces in my new collection like “Love Will Find A Way” and “Better Together” walk the line between the pretty and gritty nature of life; they show the raw, imperfect world in our streets but shine a light on hope and love!

My style is intuitive in nature and combines layers of acrylic paint,
paper collage, spray paint, markers, and a variety of materials found in my daily
activities to express that intuition. Each piece is created by throwing, mopping, pouring, spraying, and scraping the paint, reworking the pieces until they tell my stories and express my passion for life. I am never afraid to let the crazy show in my work.

My foray into the art world was primarily developed while working as a volunteer art teacher for the San Diego public school system in which my children were enrolled. In the following years I eventually developing my own art style and started teaching these accumulated methods and theories in intermediate and advanced art classes in San Diego. Today, I am a full-time career artist with pieces showing in art exhibits across the United States, Mexico, and Spain. I also represent fellow artists in the promotion and distribution of their art on a national level. I have extended my volunteer position to teach classes at The Monarch School, Just in Time for Foster Youth program, and the Ronald McDonald House. In 2021 I co-founded F1VEart Studio and Gallery in San Diego where I showcase my pieces today.

Being an artist was never my intention, but in 2009, after a very serious, but magical twist of fate, I was thrust into the art world…it was not planned, it was not on my radar, I never even thought of being an artist. It happened in a flash…I was struck by a car and just like that I was on my back for over a year; art was my therapy, my way back and my new focus. My outlook on life and my art career are pretty simple…I create what makes me happy, I enjoy life to the fullest, I love to share my ideas and art with people and I don’t get caught up in worrying. I’ve seen a side of life that most people have never seen, and to come out on the other side as an artist is true magic! My art speaks to life, love, joy and happiness. I have joy in my heart and I want the world to feel it! Some of my art is pretty and some of it is gritty, but it all revolves around love. It’s a layered tapestry of my life, it’s lessons, and the joy I feel in my heart.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love having visitors to San Diego. One of my favorite things to do is to jump on my cruiser and cruise the boardwalk in Pacific Beach or Coronado, both are amazing and so beautiful. While in Pacific Beach, I love the fun vibe at JRDN at Tower 23 for a quick bite to eat, cocktail or a nice coffee by the beach. In Coronado, I love Little Frenchie, Henry’s or Nado restaurants. There are so many wonderful places, you can’t go wrong in either location. Another fun trip is to visit the San Diego zoo, I visit the zoo once a week for a long walk and exercise…there is always something new and exciting happening at the zoo. For a fun night out for dinner, I love Herb and Wood restaurant, Trust, Fort Oak and Seneca Trattoria, and for lighter fair I like Luce’ bar, it’s a casual, with a fun atmosphere, and great margaritas! For visitors that like a good fitness challenge I like to take them to Mission Trails Regional Park for a nice challenging hike on any of the 5 peaks…Cowles Mountain, Pyles Peak, Kwaay Paay, South Fortuna and North Fortuna, and if they’re really adventures we can try the 5-Peak Challenge; 5 peaks in one day!

San Diego is a beautiful place and it has so much to offer for anyone that wants to visit.
