We had the good fortune of connecting with Annie Armstrong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Annie, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
So many things! I’m so grateful that my work really is my passion. Wedding days are my favorite, I get so lit up by them. They are so long, physically taxing, with so many moving parts and logistics but absolutely the most rewarding to see everything come together. There’s nothing like handing my client their bouquet – making something that was a vision in their head, a tangible reality they can hold in their hands. It’s such a unique and special experience to share with someone. I’m also happiest in my garden, watching my seedlings sprout and grow and blossom into flowers I can then design with.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Reflecting on the past 10 years of this, it definitely hasn’t been easy; there are and always will be ups and downs. I like to take those ebbs and flows as opportunities to reevaluate and grow. I have systems in place and have an order of operations with how I do things but I like to stop every now and then and see if there are ways to improve, be more efficient, and rethink how I’m currently operating. It’s easy for me to get stuck doing things the same way when they are working. Of course, I want things to be working well but I like to challenge myself to look at things with fresh eyes. I think consistency is really key, not only in producing good work but also in creating a joyful experience for my clients. Even though I’m in a creative field and the artistic aspect is important, I always try to make sure my clients and business are being cared for just as much as my art.

My newest expansion is getting into growing my own flowers to use in my designs. This allows me to grow unique floral varieties that are often hard to find, or not available. It’s such an added special touch for my clients and I think they can feel how much I care about my craft and making something really tailored to them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The beach is always my go-to, I grew up going to Zuma every week and it feels very nostalgic to me now. If we were going to stay on the eastside, I would definitely take them for a stroll around the Silverlake reservoir, maybe with a little picnic in the meadow. I love it in there. Definitely would bop around Atwater Village; there are so many cute restaurants and shops on Glendale. I love grabbing lunch outside at Dune or Siniski and then picking up a few things for dinner at McCall’s with some wine from Nico’s and having a cute BBQ dinner party at home with more friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This one goes out to the farmers and gardeners, we would be nothing without them! As I’m learning more and more about growing my own flowers I am so in awe with the people who do this on a large scale. There are so many cool independent growers throughout California that provide the flowers we make our designs with, along with the big farms in other countries that import and export blooms. Flowers have such a long life before they make it into our hands or in a vase, and I am eternally grateful to the people who make that happen.
