We had the good fortune of connecting with Mercedes Bazan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mercedes, what makes you happy? Why?
Seeing and spending time with my family and friends makes me really happy! I moved to California 6 years ago and I don’t get see them that often, so when I get the chance to travel and be with them, I enjoy it a lot.
I enjoy traveling and exploring new places, I love trying new food and taking pictures with my film camera.
I am happy when I am surrounded by people who care about me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started drawing because I loved anime. Since I was a kid I have been fascinated by the clothes, the character design, the colors among other things.
When I started studying graphic design at the University I stopped drawing completely. Around 2018 I was living in Dublin and I was feeling extremely lost with my life and I was feeling very depressed. So I started drawing again so I could express a little bit how I was feeling. I was drawing girls that were frowning or mad as a hobby and because it was very therapeutic to me.
I had a friend that by that time worked in Cartoon Network Latin America as a project manger and they were creating a campaign for the Latin Heritage month. They contacted me to create a small illustration for their social accounts. I think this was the first time I was recognized as an illustrator and from that moment on I started freelancing as one.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in San Francisco, California at the moment, so when I have people coming over for a visit I always recommend spending a warm afternoon at Mission Dolores park or the GG park.
Visiting the SF MoMA is also great, they have temporal exhibitions so there is always something new to see.
For food I would recommend this Mexican place that is called Gracias Madre. It is completely plant based and the food it is SO good! For vegetarian and non vegetarian sushi I always recommend going to Sushi Zone the owners and the staff are really kind and lovely people.
And for fun, I love going bowling so Mission Bowling club is a must for me.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a big shout out to the Stripe design team who changed my life forever. The design team at Stripe gave me the amazing opportunity to work abroad. This made me grow in so many aspects emotionally and professionally.
