We had the good fortune of connecting with Annie Semenova and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Annie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I came to the US almost 10 years ago, alone with my 5-year-old daughter. I knew that from then on, I would be both mom and dad to her. I wanted to be present in her life, to take her to activities – dancing, singing, acting, piano. A 9-to-5 job wasn’t an option for me. I wanted to help people, but also, help my own child.
My first business was an acting studio for kids, where I could save money and time for my daughter’s activities and spend more time with her. When she signed with a great agency and started booking jobs, other moms began asking me how we did it. My current business grew out of this natural need from moms seeking information on how to help their children become professional actors.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I help moms launch their kids’ acting careers, and to be honest, I don’t have much competition. Usually other moms don’t like to share their experience or they’re just too busy dealing with their kids’ careers. I’ve always had a very strategic mind, and the education and experience I have allowed me to create a system that works perfectly for people who are able to implement those steps.
It wasn’t easy to build the online course I have today, because business is such a complicated enterprise now. You not only need to have a great product, you need a great team, marketing, tech, documentation, etc. Not everyone can do it, and that’s why most people choose to work for someone else.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way – never give up. From time to time I have a feeling that I’ve hit a wall, and my brain starts to come up with excuses to give up everything and drink mojitos somewhere in Bali, but I know I have another 10-20 years of working time when I can build wealth for my family and help kids shine.
I just want the world to know that you can achieve anything you want, because a little girl from Odessa in Ukraine was able to build the life of her dreams and helps others. I have many more beautiful dreams, and I’m definitely on my way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ok, this is my favorite question. I actually have my friend visiting LA now.
Monday would be a workout day. I’ll take my friend for a powerlifting workout at Equinox, after which we’ll go to the sauna. After the gym, we’ll go to Erewhon to have some expensive smoothies, but hey, they’re really good. Later this day, I’d take her to a Kundalini Activation practice to awaken feminine and masculine energy.
Tuesday will start with hiking at Fryman Canyon Trail. It’s a short trail in Studio City, but very convenient. After, we’ll go to Uba Tuba to have some frozen yogurt. In the evening, we can go to Connie and Ted’s to have some oysters with rosé.
Wednesday will be a yoga day, followed by a nice lunch at Aroma Cafe in Studio City. After, we can go to Rodeo Drive for some shopping and eventually dinner at a new restaurant, “Novikov”.
Thursday is a beach day. We’ll go to Malibu – Zuma Beach, getting açaí bowls on our way there, and dinner at Nobu.
Friday – Urth Caffe and shopping on Melrose, then a High Heels class in Playground.
Saturday – The Broad museum, my favorite sushi spot in Little Tokyo (I don’t share it anymore, as the line there is 2 hours now), and a cool bar across the street.
Sunday – beach day again, biking in Santa Monica and hand rolls after.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I just started, I didn’t have money for building a website, design, logo, etc. I have a friend – Maria Tsvetkova. She’s an incredible singer and songwriter. And she has lots of other talents. So she did all that for free, and I gave her 30% of my revenue later. I’m so grateful that she helped me at the very beginning. And we had a lot of fun building everything from nothing.
