We had the good fortune of connecting with Anoush Nicoghosian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anoush, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always loved to draw and had a thing for the Armenian alphabet. Even when I was a child back in the Netherlands where I grew up half Armenian, half Dutch. When I first decided to combine my love for art and Armenian letters, I began with the idea that I could take an ancient script and bring a new & adventurous approach to the table. I called it “Armenian Alphabet Art with a Twist” and it drew the attention of both Armenian and non-Armenian viewers. What started as a hobby by sharing my hand lettering experiments on social media, grew into owning a small business where people can find a selection of my artwork they would want to welcome into their home.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a Lettering Artist dedicated to the Armenian alphabet. Known for my hand drawn letterforms & illustrations that highlight the beauty of Armenian letters, my work is often bilingual and is focused on stylized, but visually pleasing lettering art. My personal drive to preserve the Armenian alphabet & create an original style of my own, has pushed me to where I am today professionally. It hasn’t been easy (and still isn’t), as it can take a while for some people to step out of their comfort zone when it comes to Armenian art that’s non-traditional. But the challenge is what motivates me most. At the end of the day, it’s all about loving what you do and making people smile while doing it!
As a diasporan artist, my Armenian identity has always been an important part of my life. My work is a reflection of how the different languages spoken by Armenians don’t just coexist, but weave in and out of each other to form the essence of the diaspora. From Monster Letters to 100% REAL Food Lettering. From Armenian Pun Art to Chalkboard Lettering. I will always continue to find new ways to bring the same amount of adventure to the letters and branch out to get creative with my work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
L.A. has so much to offer, but if I had to narrow it down, I would take them hiking at one of the many beautiful mountain trails to enjoy the views and fresh air. Of course we’d have to go the beach and soak up the sun (especially if they’re visiting from the Netherlands) and enjoy some authentic Mexican street taco’s. Shop and dinner at The Americana at Brand in Glendale and perhaps catch a comedy show at The Laugh Factory in Hollywood. And after a night of dancing at one of the clubs, we’d definitely have to end the night with In-N-Out Burger! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to the Armenian community for their continuous love & support and to my husband, family and friends for always standing behind me 100% in my creative journey!
