We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Fletcher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
As a child, I was always interested in the arts, mainly because I don’t have any athletic ability, like my older siblings. I have a large and vivid imagination, so I had many hours of playing with my action figures in my room. As I got older, movies would get more prominent in my life, especially when I was able to go the theater by myself, and just immerse myself. Like most filmmakers, Star Wars 77’ gave me the biggest impact and would trigger my interest in the movie making process. I remember going to the public library and local bookstore going through as many behind the scenes books on movies as I could. Then, in high school I began creating comic books, and I would share them with my friends. It was confirmed, I would become an artist.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Coming from humble beginnings has prepared me for the ups and downs of my chosen path. But my need to create has always sustained me, especially during the downs. Later in life when I finally decided to go full-time with my life goals, I’m fortune enough to have a partner who has always supported me, both emotionally and financially, allowing me to do what I do, and I have accomplished a lot, including launching my own production company ABM Digifilms in 2003, with my first feature, “Death By Association”, followed by my second feature in 2005, “What Hides Beneath”, around that same time I became a recording studio sound engineer, started a record label and became a recording artist and music producer, while also directing music videos (for my label and others). I shifted, and started making shorts that include my 2008 award-winning short, “The Death of Milo Freedman” and my fan film “Catwoman Retribution” in 2017. Its not easy balancing life, school and family while pursuing a career in the both the film and music industries, believe me, sometimes I question it, and myself. But I think what sustains me the most is the thirst of creativity, to tell stories, it’s my proficiency.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m currently in the DMV (Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland) so there’s tons to do, be it a new dive bar somewhere in Baltimore, to a new fusion restaurant in D.C. But one the coolest places, so far must be Power Plant Live in Baltimore. But I’m still discovering.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ll shout out to my family who have always pushed my endeavors with encouragement and support. Temple University, in Philadelphia, gave me the foundation and mentorship to become a filmmaker, and of course, my current university, Maryland Institute of Creative Arts (MICA) in Baltimore, who are giving me the additional tools that will help me pursue my goals as an indie filmmaker.
