We had the good fortune of connecting with Anya Knower and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anya, how does your business help the community?
The driving force behind my business stems from a statement I heard when I worked at a device company: “We are in the business of bankrupting doctors.” This has stayed with me, serving as a constant reminder of why I do what I do.

I started my business to address a significant need within the medical aesthetic space. I recognized the necessity not only to expose the unethical side of the aesthetics industry but also to support practices and med spa owners in growing their businesses organically. Too often, these professionals become reliant on exploitative marketing companies that offer little value and prey on their inexperience.

The industry is filled with smoke and mirrors. Device companies target doctors who have been let down by our healthcare system, promising them a dream of cash-pay treatments and med spa services that will transform their lives and make them wealthy. Unfortunately, these doctors are often the first to fail. These companies sell them hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment, drop the devices off at their doorsteps, and leave them to figure it out alone. Many doctors, lacking business and marketing expertise, are set up to fail from the start.

My mission is to expose these predatory practices and educate med spa owners and practitioners, empowering them to avoid these common traps. I focus on helping them build sustainable, successful practices without relying on the manipulation and false promises so rampant in this industry.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hey there! So, here’s a little backstory on my journey. After over 12 years in the aesthetics game, I found myself in a toxic work environment, working for a big aesthetic device company in LA. Think of it as a mix of “The Office” and a bad reality show—I was bullied, mistreated, and preyed upon. When I got fired, my ego was bruised, but instead of wallowing in self-pity, I decided to channel that frustration into something amazing.

Cue the dramatic music: I launched my own company to protect my beloved clients from the not-so-nice folks in the industry. My motto? “May the bridges I burn light the way!” It’s still my guiding star. I’ve surrounded myself with good people and honest clients, and that’s the vibe I always wanted.

As far as what we do at The Aesthetics Advantage, I could give you the professional Chat GPT version of what we do that is on our website but I’d like to explain it in a way that people can actually digest. First and foremost, we both build and empower med spas. We do everything from creating your logo, to helping you negotiate your device purchases, build out internal marketing strategies, train their team on how to sell, how to do consultations and I’ve even picked out paint color on the wall.

What sets us apart from the other consultants? Well, we can’t be bought. While many consultants might be swayed by financial incentives to recommend certain companies, we stick to our guns and work only with vendors we trust. Authenticity is rare in this industry, and we’re here to rise above it all and expose those who choose not to.

Now, let’s talk about our secret sauce: the “Dating App Method.” Our goal is simple: set you up for success and then let you fly solo—find your perfect match and delete the app! We focus on sustainable marketing strategies that foster real relationships, like building memberships and referral programs, rather than relying on expensive ads. We care about your long-term success, not your wallet.

Let’s be real: owning a business isn’t a walk in the park. There have been financial hurdles and factors beyond our control. But guess what? The industry is booming, my platform is growing, and so is The Aesthetics Advantage. So, here’s to the journey—full of challenges, laughter, and a few burned bridges along the way!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You’ve asked the wrong person! If i’m not in California traveling around to various med spas, I’m traveling out of state to various med spas, or I’m taking content, doing Zoom trainings or on the phone with prospective clients or reps. Rather than me give you an itinerary of LA. Let me, as a licensed aesthetician, tell you what my favorite aesthetic treatments are that you can get here in LA!

Favorite Devices / Treatments:

Tetra CoolPeel – The CoolPeel is a CO2 laser and its the only CO2 that is for ALL skin types. There is little to no downtime and its guaranteed to tighten the skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, reduce pore size, lighten dark spots / hyperpigmentation. Its my absolute favorite treatment of all time. 10/10

Virtue RF- Virtue RF is Microneedling with Radio Frequency. It’s like the Morpheus8 except it doesn’t suck. Again, there’s virtually no downtime and boosts collagen production to tighten the skin, reduce fine lines, helps tremendously with acne and acne scarring, reduces pore size and you can use it face and even body to eliminate fat.

You can go on to the Cartessa Website and it will show you what providers are in your area. I can’t play favorites 🙂

Oh and you can’t go wrong with a summertime Bungalow night with the girls and a Drip Daddy Coffee in Silverlake!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe much of my success to the unwavering love and support of my family. They’ve always taught me to “do the right thing, no matter who’s watching,” and that core value guides me in both my personal life and business. Running a business has its ups and downs, and while my parents may not have fully understood what I was doing day-to-day for almost a year, they were always there with constant encouragement and sound advice.

Another key figure in my journey is Jen Engles, the owner of Amachi Medical Aesthetics in Newport Beach. Jen started as a mentor but quickly became a close friend. Her impact on my life, both professionally and personally, has been profound. We’ve both been in the industry for more years than we’d like to admit, and her daily encouragement and infectious positivity have helped me push through the many challenges of this field. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her support.

I also want to give a special shoutout to all the practice owners and their teams that I’ve had the privilege of working with. I deeply value our relationships, and their ongoing support means the world to me. Together, we continue to grow, learn, and overcome the challenges of this industry.
