We had the good fortune of connecting with Apra Bhandari CEO, Adaa Dance Dance Studio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Apra Bhandari, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I wanted to open a studio that would welcome everyone who wanted to experience the joy of dance. I feel so blessed every day that I am able to share my love and passion for the arts with all my students. There is so much value and power in arts and dance, especially for a child that really needs more attention and focus. As a parent, I am very mindful of making sure my own kids are well rounded as I have seen how deeply and intuitively children connect to music, dance and movement. These skills help them stay focused, coordinated, flexible, disciplined and positive. We all know and feel the pressure that children experience so early on nowadays, and I truly believe and know that when a child has a positive outlet to help them relieve their stress it is easier for them to not lose their path. They will always find their way back. We are more than a dance studio, we are a dance family, and we strive to create a positive, enriching, inclusive and fun environment for our students of all age groups. There is so much good that arts and dance provides, and I wish to make everyone more aware and appreciative of that.
What should our readers know about your business?
Adaa Indian and Bollywood dance academy is a true example of what hard work, passion, vision and determination can create. When I started teaching, I had no idea what I wanted from this business. I knew I wanted to inspire my students, provide stellar training so they can blossom in their dance journey and have a space that was loving, nurturing, positive and flowing with creativity. I believe my work ethic, commitment to my vision and the values I’ve instilled in the academy have really helped us expand and continue to offer our students the foundation to become strong, confident, disciplined and passionate dancers. Owning a business is never easy, but setting goals, putting systems in place and continuing to educate yourself in your field are key factors to overcoming challenges and achieving success. I have learned that being honest with your work, genuinely caring and staying focused never go unnoticed. I have learned that delegating is key. I have understood that I will make mistakes but will also find ways to improve my shortcomings. Also, I have found that I am extremely lucky to make my passion my work. I wish that Adaa Dance Academy continues to offer the most comprehensive and strong dance training to its students, that we help them not only achieve their utmost potential as a dancer but also instill in them life values they can carry with them forever. I want to bring so much joy to each and every one of my students that they use dance as a means to de-stress, re-energize and stay connected to their roots. I want people to feel pride in being a part of the Adaa family and to know I am so grateful for their love and support.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I still have so much to discover about LA! I’d love to explore new places and hidden gems with my friend. I love how we can go from Santa Monica to San Diego or from the mountains to the beach within a day’s time!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think it is very important to remember and thank anyone that helped you succeed, achieve your dreams and stay focused. For me, our students and their parents have been instrumental in Adaa Dance growing every year. We have been blessed with families that continue to support us, cheer us on and stay committed to us. Our students motivate us to continue offering the best training and create a positive and inclusive space. Also, my staff is absolutely my biggest strength. The business started in my living room with two kids. For many years, I did everything on my own, but I was only able to really take bigger leaps when I built a staff of ambitious, kind, talented and supportive individuals. I believe everyone that comes into your life can teach you a valuable lesson as long as you are able to recognize the lesson and use it to help you grow. Finally, it goes without saying that my beautiful family has always been there for me and I am forever grateful to them for believing in me and encouraging me to dream bigger and bigger every day.
