We had the good fortune of connecting with April Bermudez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, why did you pursue a creative career?
There’s a lot that I have to say, too much sometimes according to my report cards in grade school, and I notice a lot, and I remember stuff and I’m interested in so many things. I need to express it to whoever wants to pay attention.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is informed by my experiences. I was at an impasse a couple of years ago with the art I was producing. I was creating aesthetically pleasing compositions, I know how to do that well, and they were in exhibitions, so I was receiving recognition and praise but they just weren’t doing it for me. So I took a step back and thought about the kind of art that I could make that no one else could and ultimately I came to the conclusion that the only thing that could truly come from only me were my stories. And that’s what my art has been about since. I began a series titled What Doesn’t Kill Me, telling stories from my childhood in illustrative paintings and drawings. I started creating stylized digital self portraits, and now I’m working on a series that I’m really excited about, A series titled Infinite Spiral, an idealized interpretation of my perspective on life and existence. With the portraits and the childhood stories, there is a story that they are trying to tell, so they follow certain guidelines but with this Infinite Spiral series, I can experiment and play with different mediums and new ways of painting. its invigorating.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first thing I would do would be to check out a list of free museum days around Los Angeles. Maybe we’d go to the Natural History Museum. I remember going there on field trips as a kid and the last time I went, I saw a school bus pulled up to the front and that made me smile. Maybe we’d go to the Griffith Observatory. a nice hike and walk around the observatory, then head to Downtown Los Angeles and stop at Grand Central Market to get lunch. There’s a few choices for lunch there, I’ll be having Ramen Hood. I have a soft spot for the area, so a stroll around DTLA would be nice. I have other parts of this beautiful city I could recommend but it’s kind of a hard time to think about them at this time that this interview is being given, January 2025. but I love Los Angeles and all it’s amazing communities that I’m sure you could find magic in any place here.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First I’d like to give a shout out to Shoebox Arts and Kristine Schomaker. Through the international call and response collaborations with other artists, peer mentorship program, and workshops, I have become a better artist with clear goals and the best part, gained a community of like minded artists and creatives. My other shoutout has to be for my brother Julian Bermudez, the owner and galleries of Bermudez Projects. a Los Angeles gallery, now in its 15th year. It is for a more personal reason, but showing that it was possible to have a career based in the arts, for someone that came from our neighborhood of south central Los Angeles, and someone with whom I shared DNA, he is a testament to perseverance and the importance of a healthy mindset.
