We had the good fortune of connecting with April Spurlock and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of Flea Treats is the product itself!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Flea Treats has been around since 1980. It is a vitamin B-complex dietary supplement for dogs and cats containing brewers yeast and real liver. Given twice a day, animals develop skin cells that smell bad to fleas. There are no insecticides or hormones and since B vitamins are water soluble, there is no risk in giving too many. The real liver makes them a treat that pets love. The only side effect is a healthy coat and skin!!!

Since Flea Treats have been around for 40+ years, our challenges were related to improving the website/order processing and shipping times. We’ve also been advertising on social media and have increased the number of retail stores carrying Flea Treats, with our target being small, independent businesses who prioritize pets’ health and offer only higher quality foods and supplies.

We will always believe in ourselves and Flea Treats! Taking things in stride, and knowing challenges just have to be overcome is important. My brother and sister are fantastic and we will keep spreading the word about Flea Treats to as many people as possible!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many great places to have fun in Southern California – here’s an idea of what I would consider an enjoyable week with a friend in my local area, Long Beach:

Day 1- After arriving, a relaxing dinner and drinks at Anna’s Joint on Pine & 5th in Downtown Long Beach before settling in for the night.

Day 2 – Rosie’s Dog Beach and lunch at one of the many dog friendly restaurants within walking distance. I’ve heard good things about Chuck’s Coffee Shop and need to take the Flea Treats pack to check it out! Maybe a speakeasy or local brewery for the evening.

Day 3 – We could enjoy some breakfast burritos at The Grain Cafe before spending the afternoon paddleboarding and/or kayaking in Alamitos Bay. For dinner, we’d head over to Aki Sushi Bar & Bai Plu Thai Restaurant on 7th for some excellent dishes!

Day 4 – Museum Day! We’d start at the Long Beach Museum of Art and have breakfast at their restaurant, Claire’s. We’d then soak up some culture at the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), and the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (PIEAM). We’d end a busy day with a relaxing meal at one of my favorite vegan food spots, Seabirds.

Day 5 – Before a walk on the beach, we’d stop at The Wild Chive for breakfast. After that, we’d go to the Aquarium of the Pacific, then have dinner and some beers at the Yard House.

Day 6 – We’d head south to pick up my brother and sister, and we’d all go to Buena Park to visit Knott’s Berry Farm. After a day at the park, we’d pop out for dinner at one of the many eating places at the Packing District in Anaheim. Of course we’d have to take my friend to visit a couple of the retail stores in Orange County (Citi Pawz in Anaheim and Collar & Leash Pet Shop in Garden Grove) that carry Flea Treats!

Day 7 – We’d wrap up my friend’s visit with a tour of the Queen Mary followed by a sunset dinner and cocktails at the Queen Mary’s famous Observation Bar.

There are so many other things to do in Long Beach, and even more if you venture further into the surrounding cities.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I absolutely have to dedicate my shoutout to my mom. She made learning fun and encouraged me to do whatever I wanted to. We had so many animals growing up – dogs, lizards, snakes, pheasants, quail, ducks, chickens, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, rabbits, hermit crabs, fish, and we even had a goat for a very short time! Mom’s love for animals and belief that ‘if there is a will there is a way’ has been a guiding force for me. I love animals and will do anything for them. We started using Flea Treats on our animals after discovering the product at the Orange County Fair in the 1990s. The other shout out goes to the previous owners of Flea Treats for creating the product and gathering thousands of customers all over the United States and Canada.
