We had the good fortune of connecting with Aravis Rey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aravis, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’m a storyteller through and through and have been for as long as I can remember. I LOVE stories, tales, legends, myths and I love the way we share them. We have movies, music, art, theatrics, books, even basic communication when we talk to our friends – all sorts of stories and so many unique ways we can tell them. My favorite part of Stories has always been the characters. Characters have so much to them – their own depth, growth, struggles, morals, experiences, all unique to that particular character whether they’re the hero, the villain, the best friend or even someone who’s just in the background. Even music is written to be the character in its own medium. Characters have fascinated me since childhood as has performing arts and filmmaking. The idea of taking our knowledge of a character and story, digging deeper and connecting, being able to portray and be that character to tell the story to an audience grew into a true love and passion for the artform of it all. I still remember being very young, seeing this one little musical and it was this sudden wave of connection I felt throughout the show because I just knew I belonged there. Not in the spotlight or in the applause and praise – but there as a storyteller. Ever since then, I’ve been following that feeling. Lots of school,, lots of networking, lots of performing, lots of trying, and lots and lots of learning. It’s a path for dreamers but that’s just what us artists are by nature. As long as we’re happy in the journey, we’ll have made it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve had so much fun getting to be all kinds of different characters with the different opportunities I’ve been given. From a lawyer in one performance to a talking toucan in another, its always unique and its always fun. That’s the big thing for me; having fun. There’s still so much I’m learning as an actor and performer and there always will be which excites me. I LOVE learning, I love getting to try something new or different. Being an artist definitely isn’t easy, whether were actors or singers, painters, animators, – its a journey full of lots of trial and error. But that’s the journey! Everything happens for a reason and sometimes the answer is ‘no’ but even that ‘no’ can lead us to something even grander, something meant specifically for us. We have to keep trying, always! We have to keep learning and keep growing, but keep striving with happiness. We’re doing what we love and as long as we love it, we’re on the right path. As for the world, oh it’s definitely big and I’m definitely very small but if by some miracle the opportunity ever comes – I’d love to tell the world a story.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s so much fun and adventure that can be had around here! Disneyland will always be my absolute number one recommendation. The park is the perfect place for just being happy and carefree and enjoying the escapism, There’s Incredible rides and attractions and the park is rich in history. For awesome movie history and experiences and behind the scenes experiences, visiting Universal Studios and Warner Brother’s Studios for their tours is perfect, My dinner recommendation will always be Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner over at Knott’s Berry Farm. Another place full of history and the meal itself is incredible. You will never forget it! There’s an abundance of museums, zoos, aquariums, Medieval Times, all kinds of places to check out! There’s so much opportunity for an incredible vacation. The best places to eat will always be at the little restaurants you find tucked away in a cozy little corner. The fruit vendors you’ll find on the sidewalks have the most delicious array of fruits (I recommend the mango & pineapple with some tajin and lime, yum!) but you definitely should try an In-N-Out burger while you’re visiting too. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d say one of my mentors, Ashlee Espinosa! She was one of my acting teachers and honestly, the best that I’ve ever had. This is her passion, you can easily see that in who she is and how she is with her students. There’s this dedication she has with all of us not just as a director or teacher but as someone who truly wants to see us grow and find happiness and success. She recognizes that we’re all human with so many different and unique elements that make up every single one of us – different strengths, weaknesses, talents, all of that, and she celebrates it. There’s been so many times I’ve seconded guessed my talents and abilities but when I started working with Ashlee – those second guesses and fears became just that. She builds us up to truly believe in ourselves and our own potentials ,allowing us to grow and challenge those fears. I am beyond thankful and grateful for getting to learn from her and having her in my life. Her impact is a blessing!
