We had the good fortune of connecting with Arezou Yaghoubian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arezou, what are you inspired by?
I am inspired by many things, my patients, my students, my friends, but most importantly I am inspired by my parents, they are the reason I am where I am today. Their perseverance and strength immigrating from Iran to the US with two small children and starting their life from ground zero has given me the drive to be the person I am. Their hard work and dedication has shown me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Despite all their hardships, they showed my brother and I unconditional love, support and gave us a happy home. Randy Pausch said it best, we cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am very fortunate to have a job that I love doing every day and is incredibly rewarding. I don’t even consider it as a job or career but more of a passion. After 10 years of post-medical school training, I am a triple boarded plastic and reconstructive surgeon with a subspecialty in hand surgery. The road was definitely challenging but I would do it again in a heartbeat if given the opportunity. I am fortunate enough to not only have my own private practice where I get to be an entrepreneur but also I get to teach medical students and residents plastic surgery and hand surgery as a UCLA instructor. I feel very blessed to have a career that is so well balanced and gives me the ability to use my creative and problem solving abilities to be able to help patients have better quality of lives. I take pride in taking care of my patients like I do my friends and family whether inside the operating room or in my clinic and strive for perfection and success. Their success is my success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is the best city in the US so obviously I am a little biased. Ooooh so many good places to eat Gjelina, Katsuya, Craig’s, Milk Bar …… Gotta see Getty Museum, watch a game at Staples, people watch on Rodeo Drive, visit Hollywood and celebrity star search on the walk of fame….. Must hang out in Malibu, Runyon canyon hike, our own venice canals
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom and dad.
