We had the good fortune of connecting with Arisce Wanzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Arisce, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I don’t believe in following the rules or going the traditional route…especially when it comes to a career in entertainment. All our lives we’re taught to fall in line, not to ruffle any feathers, keep our nose to the grindstone; all trash advice that keeps you in a place lower than you set out to go. There’s an old saying, “You’re boss will never pay you enough to live in the same neighborhood as him.” To that i say rebel, bend the rules, use wit charm, cunning, whatever edge you have on the competition to get out of a stagnant place. Playing it safe has never made headlines.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
A lot of people don’t realize this but i actually style and produce many of my own high fashion shoots down to my hair, nails, and even set designs. Just last year, I went through a slow period so I thought about what i’d like to see in a magazine, called some photographers i’d either worked with or had been meaning to work with and sent them my concepts.
After that, I location scouted, shopped my own closet for unworn clothes i hadn’t been photographed in, bought some set pieces, arranged shoots dates and got to work. Both shoots done within a week of each other.
I didn’t know where they were going to be published when we shot them but both editiorials found homes in a few weeks, one in L’Officiel Vietnam and the other in Abookof Magazine, each featuring interviews about my career.
Just months later, i was made an official Playboy Bunny, I quickly suggested my dream shoot concept and preferred photographer. I produced, location shouted, and styled everything. My photographer, Martin Salgo, was master of lighting, smoke machine, and providing the perfect eye for my vision. The shoot was another big success in self production I couldn’t be more proud of.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Funny enough i just did this just last week as i was hosting my best friend. First stop is the Beverly Center as it’s my favorite mall, not to mention my image is three stories high in their main hall and elevators for the next few months Haha!
Next stop Playa del Rey with my dog, it’s her favorite park, really mine, as it has a lovely lagoon, plenty of trees for shade and a beautiful open field for her to play in.
Next we’d get Tawanna Thai for takeout and watch a camp movie in my over-priced apartment, because LA’s rent is an absolute JOKE.
Then we’d go to Erewhon so that my guest could get a sugary, twenty five dollar smoothie that seems to have it’s own P.R. team.
Then we’d go out to the best party in Los Angeles, EVITA. Don’t believe me, look it up, got to watch Ashlee Simpson live, her first performance in 22 years. ICONIC.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jeofroi
Jeofroi is an up and coming fashion house with two young black insanely talented designers at the helm, one of which is my childhood best friend Roy Carey. He and his design partner Jeff hired me as the fit model for their recent trunk show at Soho House in downtown Los Angeles and the experience couldn’t have been more lovely. And did i mention the clothes are out of this world gorgeous? i wanted every piece they put me in! They’re already surrounded with buzz and have dressed tons of your favorite celebs and artists. I look forward to wearing a gown of theirs at a near future red carpet.
