We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashlee Gardner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashlee, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
In the beginning , it’s always busy. There is a lot of uncertainty and excitement . When my parents opened the Cat and Fiddle in 1982, my twin sister and I were just born and had a 3.5 year old sister . There wasn’t a lot of balance in the beginning . My dad was the PR guy that loved to entertain and my mum ran the actual day to day business and kept the bits together . Together they made a great team, but being this was their first business together and no experience in restaurants – there was a lot of learning that had to happen . I think along with experience, financial security and confidence is when the work / life balance starts to unfold. .Our business 38 years later , runs on a bit of an auto pilot because we have amazing staff and long time customers that support us . One thing about the restaurant business is its better when the personality behind the brand is there – it makes the staff keep consistent with the brand and the customers have familiarity to return to.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Cat and Fiddle is a British Pub and Restaurant serving staples such as Fish and Chips and savory pies. We have a deep Hollywood History. It has been called by many- a Hollywood Institution. We were established in 1982 and 38 years later and now the first and next generation running the pub, its a fun and homey place to be . A cheers bar of sorts that’s consistent with staff, service and food. A place to unwind with family and friends in a non pretentious manner in the center of hollywood. We are a community driven pub and appeal to all kinds of people – locals , arts and entertainment industry , tourists … a very diverse group. Keeps it entertaining for all! We are family run. Ran by 4 ladies with diverse interests and abilities but our common ground is our pub and our staff and customers in it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I think our pub would be the first place we would start! There are some nice places around us and I love to support our neighbors. We have Petite Trois and Mozza within our block- so id walk the block with my friends and make some new friends along the way. Our corner was coined by Anthony Bourdain as “Little Europe” we have French, Italian and our pub ( British ) . But also… being born and raised in LA- there are SO MANY wonderful places to visit . It’s impossible to be bored in this city.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom and dad , Paula and Kim Gardner . Without them, we wouldn’t be having this conversation .
