We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Chew and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
“Be realistic”. To me, this phrase always seems backhanded or as if fears are being projected onto you. What exactly is the baseline for what is “realistic” or not? Imagination, risk, experimentation, and errors have produced some of the world’s greatest creations. I am not realistic, it has never served any goals of mine.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I am most proud of my resilience. At the time of this article, I have no artist representative, gallery, administrative, or agent support. I have myself in my studio, I’m severely understaffed haha. Due to this, I have to be very mindful of how I use my time. All inquires, press, exhibitions have to go by me. Despite this, I am proud of the the clients I work with, a lengthy resume, all while producing finished work. Those who feel without support or a community, it can be done.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well my go-to is my studio, maybe have a glass a wine to catch up. Then to Dokebi for Korean BBQ, Domino Park or Gantry Plaza State Park, to see the city skyline and people watch. Lost In Paradise for brunch, Three Jewels for meditation, and Aqua Studio for a pool workout. Peak NYC, Mister French, and Cuts and Slices for dinner. Mood Ring for drinks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Every Woman-Identifying and African American Artist that has come before me.
