We had the good fortune of connecting with Ej, MusiqSheWrote and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ej,, how do you define success?
To me, success is personal. As I set goals and reach them I feel successful. I keep upping the ante and I set higher goals for myself to reach. Sometimes I fall short, sometimes my plans don’t go how I want them to. I wanted to release music to Spotify last year and perform live but I didn’t. I didn’t succeed, no matter the reason why, I failed to reach my goal. So now what? Now, I recuperate, find my direction, keep moving forward and try again.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Professionally, I’m a substitute teacher and soon I will be a full time Spanish teacher. I turned a hobby of learning Spanish into a “real” job. I’m most excited to say I have a bachelors degree and I’m proud to be a CSULB alumni. I get excited to say I work for two awesome school districts in OC. It hasn’t been easy because I get anxious and hope that I do well. Really though, I’m just a hard worker. I push to be better every day, a better teacher, a better musician, a better mom and a better person. I won’t stop because each time I reach a goal, it’s not the end, it’s time to set a new goal.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take us all around Downtown Huntington Beach 😍 Dinner at Zero Zero Pizzeria, Ola Mexican Kitchen and a local gem Longboards. Drinks at Bungalow, HB Beer Company, and The American Dream (I like beer). We’d dance at Hurricanes and go to my favorite dive off Main st. Tumbleweeds looking for karaoke 😁. Go explore LA, and walk the trails by the Hollywood sign over the reservoir. Finish it all staying a weekend at Hotel Pasea and relaxing by the Pool watching the sunset. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout the platforms that make independent music making possible: BeatStars, SoundCloud, Apple Garageband, and Spotify. Shoutout to NextUp always, for inspiring me to share my music with my peers and for putting my ego on the line to improve my process. Along the way I was told I was tone deaf, had no rhythm, and that my songs sound too much like a diary. These comments drove me to learn how to be better.
