We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashlyn Rich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashlyn, how do you think about risk?
Typically, I don’t think I would label myself as a risk taker, however, I am extremely spontaneous when my gut says “go for it” It’s a fine line between risk taking and spontaneity. Thankfully, many of my spontaneous decision have worked out in life. Knock on wood right? If I am faced with a challenge, a decision, or even an obstacle, I typically make my mind up very quickly and push forward. Sometimes this can be great and sometimes I envy people like my husband who has the ability to think everything through before making a decision. I look at big life decisions I have made, especially with work, and I know without a doubt, if I didn’t just jump, they never would have happened. Such as opening Sweat House. Opening my first studio was fairly impulsive. I decided I wanted to do it and quickly started to make that happen. I knew if I thought too much about it, I would talk myself out of it. After all, I never owned a business, I was only 28, I had just gone through a life altering tragedy, I didn’t even finish college (was still attending when I opened the studio) and to be quite honest, I had no idea what I was about to embark on. I. was never taught that working for myself was even an option and like most people, I had a college path which would ultimately lead to a career. But my gut ( I like to call it faith) spoke loud and clear. The answer was go for it, to ignore the self doubt and to jump into the unknown. I have learned over the years, the key is momentum. If I set my mind on something, move out of my way because it’s gonna happen. I think it is so valuable and important that we listen to those voices/feelings inside of us because the world isn’t always set up to be on our side. There will always be people who will doubt you, but in the end, they will believe what you do.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are not only proud, but extremity grateful for what we have accomplished over the past 8 years. It’s been a ride opening 2 studios and going through a pandemic but I will say, without our community we wouldn’t have survived it. Our tribe of amazing clients is the backbone of our business and when times get tough, they have consistently supported us and their dedication hasn’t wavered. Upon opening these studios, our mission was to create a safe space for both men and women to workout without judgement and be surrounded by other motivating and encouraging individuals. I think that is what sets us apart, this is not just a fitness studio. These clients have not only turned into friends, but many have become like family. Throughout the years, the relationships that have been built have been amazing to watch!
We make an effort every day to ensure our clients feel equally as valued and that they know how appreciated they are.
We do our best to do as many fun challenges as we can, giveaways, donations to their schools and sports, run sales etc. It’s important to have a business mindset while running a business, but equally as important to have a customer mindset to ensure you are providing them with the physical service and well as customer service that they deserve. Our goal with every class is to ensure that every client leaves feeling challenges, motivated, HAPPY, and better than they felt coming in.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We LOVE our community and Orange County truly is such an ideal vacation spot. There is so much to do!
-Nicks San Clemente. This is an amazing dinner spot. It is a tad pricier but you won’t feel like you are over paying. It’s American food and their drinks are phenomenal! I personally recommend their seabass. It’s like butter and just melts in your mouth. We also love South of Nicks (San Clemente) which is Mexican food. Their fajitas and lobster enchiladas do not disappoint.
-If you are a wine lover we recommend Ranch Capistrano Winery located in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. Their wine is not only great, but they have an amazing menu for both lunch and dinner.
What to do:
-During the summer months, you can’t go wrong going down t Del Mar street in San Clemente, grabbing a table on the patio, and ordering food and a drink. There are so many places to go all within walking distance s you can even hp around. There are so many cute shops down there as well!
-During the summer there are also many places that have free concerts in the park. It’s so fun to pack some snacks, a blanket, and hang with friends and family!
-Being that we are in OC, the amount of things to do are endless! We have the beach, amusement parks, water parks, wine tasting, horse back riding, zoos, etc. There really is something for everyone! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This particular shout out goes to my husband. I have been beyond blessed to have a husband that has never questioned the business decisions I have made. He has ultimately let me be 100% authentically me and has trusted that along the way. While he gives great insight, he has continuously supported my decisions and has ultimately trusted them. To have a partner that can support me being a business owner of two studios and having faith that our children will be taken care of, meals are still cooked, and I am still available as a wife, means the world. While being a business owner is extremely important to me, being a mom is my forever number one job. It’s not easy to manage it all, and some days are outright bananas, but to know he has faith that I have it under control means everything to me. Thankfully, when I don’t have it under control, he is there to pick me up. Owning a business is not easy. Owning 2 with 2 little kids at home makes it even harder. There have been many sleepless nights, tearful nights, etc. and not once has he ever made me feel like this won’t work or that I don’t have it altogether. He is a true partner and I am just so blessed to have him on this journey with me and that we get to continue to grow together both as partners, parents, and business owners.
