We had the good fortune of connecting with Astyn Turrentine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Astyn, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
There are few things that make me happier than spending time with my people. My family and friends mean the entire world to me and just being around them laughing till we’re close to passing out will never fail to make me the happiest.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I grew up in a very musical home and that shaped the way I grew up. I was always in choir, with my mom being the director most times. I did musical theatre. I grew up in church and am a pastor’s kid, so music was everywhere. It didn’t really become something I was seriously interested in until I got to college to study psychology and had a come to Jesus moment (literally) and changed my major to music. Honestly, college was a triiiiiip. I had a few professors that kicked my ass but they impacted me the most. I posted little covers on instagram here and there, but my first time ever playing a gig with my own songs was in 2018. I graduated in 2019 and now I mainly do background vocals (live & studio), background vocal arranging, worship leading, songwriting as well as being an artist! I got into doing all of these things because of people i’ve met along the way being so kind and bring me along with them into things. I have the best friends ever, for real. Doing creative work for the last few years, I’ve learned so much about being secure in yourself and what you have going for you because insecurity can manifest in really ugly ways, so being self aware and authentic to myself is my best bet.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wellllll, all of my best friends live within 30 minutes of me and we’re all from around the same area so this is kind of tough… Honestly… My friends are super chill so best case scenario, we’d probably get a bougie air bnb with a nice view just to sit in and talk about who knows what, cook, drink, watch stupid movies and hopefully a good sunset every night. We’re all suckers for sunsets. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think I would have to say my family… My mom, dad, brother, sister, and lil niece are my biggest support. I have a lot of really good people around me but, at the end of the day, I have learned the most from my family and they are the ones who will be around no matter what I do. Each of them have impacted me in different ways, teaching me things no one else ever could because they know me the best, even if I try to act brand new sometimes lol.
