We had the good fortune of connecting with Asya Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Asya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my business was how can I be a vessel to serve people to be able to encourage them and restore hope when life happens and all we see is nothing but sorrow and disappointment one moment after another.

My faith was a driving force behind starting my business. I had a prayer candle that I used and it came with a prayer and encouraging words. It inspired me. This candle helped me in my darkest moment. I’ve been low before and my faith in Jesus helped me through my prayer time with my candle. It’s something about light and fragrance combined that really change a mood and begin to make you feel better, feel restored.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Julia Louise Chandlery Emporium is a faith-based brand that creates candles and self-care wellness products, designed to encourage, reset, and to inspire to hope again – to be still and invite joy to flow through life’s journey. The name Julia Louise is after my great-grandmother Julia and my grandmother Louise; Emporium meaning trading place. We can trade our dark season for the light of hope.

What sets me apart from others is me. We are all uniquely made and we all have something different to give. What I am most proud of is starting the business and stepping out on faith. I am most excited about how I can create aromas that actually speaks to everyone. I get to mix and blend truly create something from nothing. The people I get to meet and talk to. The excitement I get to see when people smell my candles.

I got where I am today by not giving up and trying something new. Trusting on God to direct me with new candle, product idea m, even down to the names of my candles. No it was not an easy process. I overcome the challenges through prayer and stepping away from it when it becomes too much. I seek to find other ways to get through the obstacles and won’t take from what I’m trying to do.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way is that nothing has one answer to get to the solution. That is ok when it doesn’t work out. And to be myself and trust me. Be open to help and input. Consistency is key. Late nights will come but know when to step back and just breathe. Lastly what’s for you is for you. What your brand represents is so important even the presentation of your products.

I want the world to know that Julia Louise Chandlery Emporium is for everyone. We have aromas in our collections that connect with everyone. I have had children as customers. Everyone needs joy, hope and love. My story is a story of resilience. Life will happen sorrow, sadness, pain will come. But to trust and hope in God that he will restore you. Fill you with His love, peace and joy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was not from here I would take them to as many places as possible in a week. I would definitely take them to the beaches I love; Hermosa Beach Pier, Redondo beach and Long Beach. I love theme parks; Disneyland and Downtown Disney is a must. I am a Disney girlie, Knotts Berry Farm and Universal Studios / City walk. Take them to sites in Hollywood and Rodeo Dr./ Beverly Hills to see the people there. Go to the Madam Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe it or Not in Hollywood. Long Beach Pike; Long Beach aquarium. Newport Lido Village and maybe even Venice Beach. For food I would take them to Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles, Hot Wing Cafe in Hollywood, In & Out and Chick fil-A, Mastros (New Port Beach), Flemmings, a Mexican Food truck. Tequila Jacks in Long Beach. Bowling and miniature golf. There are more places to go but I would take them to these places for fun to get out and hang out.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I give credit to God. He is the driving force behind my business. He gifted me with the ability to be able to create and operate in my purpose to encourage and love on others. God has placed me in spaces and connected me to amazing people along this journey. My husband Orane Miller for being my support system and partner in our business. Who has been in this with me every step of the way. My community; my mom Cynthia and sister Taylor, family and friends along with a few beautiful ladies who have encouraged me along this journey of candle making and entrepreneurship. They have all been a true encouragement to me.
