We had the good fortune of connecting with Tehrell Porter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tehrell, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Charlotte, NC and Raised in Indianapolis, IN. Currently living in Honolulu, HI. I grew up on the road a lot and moved State to state just kind of running from dads credit score just trying to survive. I had a lot of solitude and started to pick up drawing from my older Sisters Tahwii and Taiya. It became my outlet and active meditation. Art allowed me to be universal . Through creativity as an introvert, art allowed me to connect and learn about myself to learn about people and the Things that inspire me. I found a huge connection with nature. I learned from trees for example all a tree wants to do is grow. This must be a true definition of commitment the way it grows. I noticed how the Sun and Moon help pull the tree out the ground everyday. The Sun and Moon must be a representation of Faith. I learned that from solitude inspires art from art creates a Culture and from a Culture breeds a Village. Art allows me to be the true authentic version of myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One trait that set me apart from other artists is that I specialize in 3D anamorphic art. I just might be the only black anamorphic muralist on this side of The Pacific. I started painting murals in 2016 and would make 10 cold calls a day from google searches of places I wanted to paint everyday to eventually book myself for the month so I could quit my job doing dishes. It was challenging at first because I didn’t have any Big names on my resume. I was washing dishes at Whole Foods so I decided to paint a mural in the break room for extra hours. After I had Wholefoods on my resume it became easier for me to get better jobs. I learned that My Art was great but I had no name.and or a big name to give the reference for the budget I felt I deserved. This pushed me to learn more and tackle the subject matter in my art I felt insecure in or felt inspired to learn more about. I would want the world to know that art is about the journey and all the emotions that finds its exact purpose on your canvas.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was coming down to Honolulu I would tell we are going g to go to the beach and going hiking on Lanikai beach and dinner at Bernini Honolulu for some amazing Italian , French inspired dishes. We would find time to take a movie tour at Kualoa Ranch, where the movies Jurassic Park and World , King Kong and Jumanji was filmed. Also because I painted the mural for the movie tour in a historic WW2 bunker. We go on a Tehre Porter Designs Mural private mural tour and site see for good memories and Mai tai. Make time to go to my favorite beach Maria beach on Westside of Oahu less then a mile from a huge cave. Make time to teach how to catch chickens and open coconuts strait from the tree. Then I would send them off with Aloha because I would have to get back to painting.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My older sister Tahwiii Spicer. https://instagram.com/adornmentsandsuch?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
