We had the good fortune of connecting with Avery Chu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Avery, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
To be myself, basically. I think the best way for me to express myself, who I am and how I am feeling is through art and creative projects. There’s no limits or restriction on how to do art ‘right’. You do what you feel is right. That’s why I love pursuing art and creating such beautiful things to share it to the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My focus has been on understanding the deep narratives and cultural implications that films carry, especially through the lens of New Hollywood cinema, as well as analyzing film genres and cinematic movements from various historical periods. What sets my work apart is my approach: I bring together a critical lens of social context, aesthetics, and theoretical analysis to better understand how film reflects and shapes society.

I am most proud of my recent work analyzing films like The Graduate, Bonnie and Clyde, and Gimme Shelter. These films helped me build a foundation for understanding how cinema responds to social changes, and my goal is to continue exploring how modern media can influence perceptions, challenge norms, and drive cultural conversation.

My journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Coming from an immigrant background, there were times I felt less connected to the mainstream perspectives around me, but this only drove me to carve out my own voice in my field. Through studying diverse cinematic works and engaging with topics on representation and identity, I learned to see my unique perspective as a strength.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the value of persistence and authenticity. It’s important to embrace what makes us different and to bring those unique experiences into our work. I want the world to know that my story is one of curiosity, resilience, and a commitment to pushing boundaries within the film and media landscape. My ultimate vision is to bridge the gap between the classroom and the industry, continually looking for ways to innovate and bring new perspectives to the media world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have been telling all my friends from other states to give a visit to Arizona – where I am currently staying. It’s been known as one of the hottest state in America, which leads to many people assume there’s not much things to do besides mountains and dessert here, which totally understandable! But to be honest, Arizona has much more to offer than just that! Yes definitely you must check out mountains and desert garden here (they are the best!), but as the same time, Arizona is one of the good place to explore Mexican cultures with multiple well-known and amazing restaurants that you definitely should try! Arizona State University (where I’m studying) is also a known place for visitor to check out!!! For sure it will blow your mind one way or another, they are involving and improving their education, along with exterior outlook and cultural appreciation every single day by their own students which is why I am so proud to call it my school. Right next to ASU in Tempe city is Mill street with multiple cool clubs and bars (reason why ASU is called a ‘party school’) so they also worth a shot to visit. Then we move up to Scottdale city which is fill with lots of boogie options for you from restaurant, bars and date night places. Be ready to spend some what money when you heading to the city!!! Lastly, we cannot forget the one and only place where Arizona can look like those colder state (filled with snow), Flagstaff is also a must-visit city with people who loves outdoor activities such as hiking, ice skating, snow boarding, etc. Especially during the winter, this is the best place to have a weekend resting, sushi and ramen here are also chef-kiss. I believe that would sum up a week long trip of visiting Arizona! So if you are my friends and reading this, better send me a text and tell me that you are planning to Arizona pretty soon!!!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wanted to shoutout my mentors Wesley Gieng, Leah Truong, and Keera Nguyen. They are genuinely one of the best people I have ever met in my life, their life filled with so much wisdom that I can learned every single day. The time I spent with them may not be much but enough for them to changed my life completely. There’s no me today without them. Also shoutout to the book that I got recommend from them that I absolutely love, Soundtrack by Jon Acuff. This book literally taught me how to look at things in a different ways and help me so much with my overthinking problems. So if anyone out there who also overthinkers just like me, highly recommend you check out that book !!!
