We had the good fortune of connecting with Avery Robinson Rouda and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Avery Robinson, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Starting a business is a lot like making a film. You have an idea that pings your emotional radar system, hitting all the right notes in all the right places, culminating in an inspired action to go out and make the thing come to life so the world can participate in this animated novelty. For me, starting Enlighten Productions was a way to share more of my work under a banner that spoke to everything I believe in as an Artist and as a Wayshower. Storytelling is by nature a spiritual experience, and so I wanted to create a safe space for other Dreamers to come together during the creative process to invoke spiritual enlightenment within and without, for the individual and the collective. As above, so below. I truly believe great stories have the potential to change the world by offering us new perspectives and giving us the permission to explore new levels of the human experience. This is the mission and meditation behind Enlighten. To cultivate the Rainbow Bridge, uniting Heaven and Earth through story.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My medium as an Artist is filmmaking; specifically writing and directing for animation. I have always been so intrigued by the art of the hero’s journey, crafting a world of drama for the screen, portrayed through a hero who has lost her/his way in a world torn apart by some kind of mysterious and threatening disaster. The Hero is all of us. The Hero’s Journey is the human experience. So to explore these nuanced walks of life with poetic absurdity is what really lights my fire. I am so proud of the short films we’ve created at Enlighten because they really do capture the voice of our company while showcasing our potential as a studio that can work on bigger projects as we grow. I’ve learned it’s important to be clear about who you want to work with or what you want to work on. During 2020, I made a declaration to the Universe, vowing to only work with responsible creatives whose main goals are to bring healing narratives to the world. Since then, I have been introduced to and collaborated with some of the most incredible storytellers who have overwhelmingly beautiful perspectives and real-life stories to share that will help so many others find deeper connection and purpose once these films/series are made and released to the public. This is what people should know about Enlighten: We craft stories that shift and uplift the consciousness of the planet. It’s not just entertaining, it’s meaningful. While it can be challenging to craft a script with so much depth, to dredge the vision up from this buried wellspring of abandoned human emotion, it’s so worth it to go on that journey as a writer because audiences can feel the intensity, intentionality, and inspirited approach that are working together to shine like a diamond through all the facets of a good film. Professionally, there is so much more work to be done to get these important films out there for the world, for the children to see. But I couldn’t be more proud of where we’re at now because it’s exactly where we’re supposed to be. The heroic human journey for all of us is still unfolding! Enlighten Productions will be here to continue to shine light and spread love during these tumultuous times.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow! I love this question. If I had a friend in town, I would immediately take them to Café Gratitude in Venice for an immortal latte and a delicious lunch where we would discuss our dreams and what we’re grateful for. After that, we’d take a walk on the beach to Ecstatic Dance for a night of dancing by the ocean under the setting sun! Next on the list, I would take my friend to one of my favorite museums in the city – The Getty. After the Getty, we’d probably grab a juice from Kreation in Brentwood and then go for a hike or horseback ride at Will Rogers. Another day would be filled with a trip to The Pottery Studio in Culver City for a quick throw on the wheel, followed by a walk to The Platform to shop and have pizza at Robertas. Next, we’d take a yoga class at Laughing Frog Yoga in Santa Monica, then drive down to Malibu for a staycay on the beach. In the morning, we’d grab Lily’s burritos and hike to a glorious waterfall in the canyons. After all that, the best way to end the trip would be to go to a live poetry slam in Silverlake (after a dinner at Little Pine of course) followed by some fried green tea ice cream from Little Tokyo. There’s so much more to do, but those are my highlights that come to mind!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of all, my successes wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my parents who have always encouraged my creative endeavors. Secondly, my fiancé and co-producer, Paul. Having studied film together at Chapman University where we both fell in love with the craft and with each other, has truly been a pillar for me as I set out to make this world a better place as an animation filmmaker. Having that support emotionally and creatively at home really facilitates limitless expansion to go deeper or further into an arc, an idea, and a world that is taking shape unconsciously, which is always a very uncertain and sometimes anxious place to be. Lastly, I would love to Shoutout to all the Dreamers and Bloomers and fellow Wayshowers I have worked with over the years. It’s a true honor to get to collaborate with so many talented friends and artists who bring their own unique expressions to the filmmaking process. Working in this field is really a dream come true, but working with like-minded souls is actually the greatest gift. We work so hard to bring these stories to life for the world and getting to celebrate the final product together is so incredible every time. So thank you, Dream Team!
