We had the good fortune of connecting with Ayumi Shibata and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ayumi, why did you pursue a creative career?
Because after pandemic happened I have a chance to check out what exactly I like, want to do, makes me happy for my life. I didn’t have time or spend time to check in myself before, because always time went by fast and just tried to be done alway whatever it came front of me. At that time, I was kind of fed up with the fashion/ apparel business that I have been working for 28 years, because as every season changes, it always same old thing / design again and again. Especially, if you work in valued priced brands, most of clothes are the same and knocking off each brand each other. I looked back that “do I really passion about designing fashion/ making apparel clothes?” or “What exactly makes me happy and excited by? “

If you have own clothing line, you can create whatever you want, but designing at apparel companies especially in LA are that what items can sell fast without originality or branding, all about sales first.

I love imaging, creating, and then collaborating people to make it a realty. I especially like that each project creates a completely different set of challenges.
That’s the reason I slightly pivoted focus on more wardrobe styling works after pandemic.

I can design, produce and style fashion. My goal of creative career is that I become a costume design/ wardrobe in the commercial and film industry. That way I can fully use my skill and creativity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a creative director, fashion designer and wardrobe stylist based in Los Angeles. I had worked in high fashion in Tokyo for 13 years and has been woking in fast fashion to read to wear fashion in the ISA for 15 years. I do create and direct new clothing lines and align/ merchandise their products into the market.
My specialize in is that I have a global prospective and international unique sense of taste. I also have a broad range of expertise from design through production to branding and styling.

My most proud of that I was awarded twice 2018 best emerging designer in the USA, also create costume for Lady gaga’s music video in the past.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my friends and family visited in the city, I always take them to my favorite restaurants where are “Bavel” in downtown, “Salazar” in Atwater and my house ( I love my house)!  Also hiking in Altadena and La Crescenta.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think a lot of people have a transition in their life after pandemic. I had a huge impact in my life from the period. In my life before the pandemic, I didn’t know even what I’m interested in, who I am, what I exactly want to do etc any questions myself. I was very self conscious and insecurity and under estimate myself for entire my life. But I wanted to say huge thanks to 3 people to make me stronger and let me realized who I am and guided me thorough to a new path.

The first person is Dorit Thies (@doritthiespphotography) who is LA based photographer. She encouraged and discipline me during my mind was all over the places, also someone with whom we make each other better.

The second person is Beate Chelette (@beatechelette) who is my mentor. I took her business consultantation. She guided me to realize who I am, what I can make a business with my skill set.

The third person is my husband Yon Thomas (@yonthomas). He inspired me thorough his work. He trusted and supported me whatever I went through.
