We had the good fortune of connecting with Azia Cherry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Azia, what are you inspired by?
In terms of my life & career, there are two things that inspire me the most and those are the hope of healing & my desire to live a life poured out.
My hope of healing is my belief that as I actively work hard to wholeheartedly love myself and do what it takes to rewire my mind & establish safety within my body I will be able to fully heal from the many things that hold me back from fully showing up as my True Self & experiencing life from a place of happiness and fulfillment.
My desire to “live a life poured out” is in reference to the fact that I don’t want to reach the end of my life and still be full of visions, hopes, and dreams that I never acted on. Recently, an instructor of mine asked how I would respond if I found out I only had 48 hours left to live and as I pondered this question my heart sank. Not because I was dying, but because I was dying before I completed my mission. That really lit a fire under me. The truth is, I’ll probably never know when my last 48 hours of life will be, but when the time comes I want to make sure that I’ve done my best to contribute some of the love, peace and healing that I’ve received back into the world. I am so thankful that I’ve been able to set myself free from so many things that held me bound mentally and emotionally, and I know other people could really benefit from me sharing the tools & practical steps that they can take to set themselves free as well. So my goal is to pour it all out – all the love, all the healing, all the peace, and all the breakthroughs – so that they can find these things within themselves and then they may have a hope of healing as well. Helping myself and the world in this way is what inspires me!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In 2020, Spirit inspired me to create my online store, thefeelgoodsoul which I launched in January of this year and I’m so very excited about it! My shop provides various spiritual/metaphysical tools to help support people on their journeys of self-love and self-healing. Supplies such as spiritual bath boxes, ethically-sourced palo santo& white sage bundles, crystals, incense, essential oils, bath salts, and herbal healing bath teas, as well as personal consultation services are what I currently offer in my shop and I am working to expand as soon as possible. My mission is to revolutionize self-care as healthcare across the globe, meaning that as we learn to properly love, care for, nurture, and tend to the needs of the Self we can help treat & prevent the many forms of dis-ease that plague the mind, body, heart, and spirit.
In our current society anxiety, depression, unfulfillment, dissatisfaction, and unhealedness is the painful reality for more than half the population. So many of us struggle with an overwhelming sense of feeling disconnected, unloved, unsupported, and unworthy. Sadly, even larger number of us suffer from the silent-but-deadly illness of mediocrity. There are way too many of us who are walking around not feeling good, we might feel “okay” but we don’t feel good. And I’m referring to the actual definition of ‘good’ and not the one society has taught us to say to keep from making ourselves or anyone else uncomfortable. The ‘good’ I’m talking about is when you feel joyous and excited about life, you feel purposeful and expressive, your creativity is flowing, you feel free and safe within your body, and you can access your inner peace and be present in the moment instead of reverting to autopilot and constantly overthinking about the past or the future. Unfortunately, there are very few of us who actually feel good, and this is where I come in. Through thefeelgoodsoul my work is to teach us how to give ourselves the “medicine” we need to feel better, and therefore revolutionize self-care as healthcare.
To elaborate, for so long we were taught to believe that the root of our pain was merely the result of the various traumas we’ve been through throughout our lives, specifically in our childhoods. And while this does hold much undeniable truth, my work over the years has shown me that focusing primarily on healing the trauma can sometimes become an endless game of whack-a-mole where we heal one thing from the past and then another pops up. There are even instances where it may be difficult to identify a specific trauma because it may be vicarious – meaning it happened to us indirectly either through our surroundings, our lineage, community, culture, or society as a whole. This “healing” cycle can become very draining and unfulfilling because after all that work we still may not feel the happiness, peace, and contentment we so desperately seek. This is because simply healing the trauma doesn’t address the core wound that the trauma left: the wound of not being able to fully engage in a loving, forgiving, nurturing, and unconditioned relationship with the Self. Notice I say “unconditioned” instead of “unconditional” because I really want to emphasize the importance of loving ourselves beyond what we’ve been conditioned to believe is the appropriate way to love ourselves. Society taught us to say we love ourselves but we barely know ourselves, we avoid open communication & intimacy with the Self. We don’t give the Self it’s basic needs like adequate water & oxygen or nourishing food. We are overly judgementalof the Self. We think and speak negatively of the Self and ignore it’s cries for help and attention. We treat the Self poorly and then hate it for responding poorly. There isn’t a human being on the planet who would receive this type of treatment from someone and still believe that person loved them. The same goes for the Self. Most of us don’t feel good, not because of what we’ve been through but because what we’ve been through caused us to throw away our relationship with Self.
Healing our relationship with Self is the most liberating, empowering, and effective elixir for any wound we may experience no matter the extent of the damage. This is because we can go about healing the wound from a space of internal love and power which fortifies and sustains us as we do our work. This is the purpose of my shop – to supply you with the tools you need to strengthen and nurture your relationship with Self so that you can heal what needs to be healed, embrace what needs to be embraced, and release what needs to be released so that you can actually feel good and experience life to the fullest.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever my friends come to visit me here in Sacramento, CA, I always try to create an itinerary that flows well and keeps our vibes high. This usually includes us connecting with nature and one another, eating good food, and maybe even doing some yoga or some sort of embodiment practice that helps us connect with ourselves on a deeper level. I’ve done this for a few of my friends and each time has been an experience that took our friendship to a new level and created memories that we still cherish today.
To start, we would travel up north to Lake Clementine which is a beautiful blue lake with a man-made waterfall. The hike down to the bottom of the waterfall is pretty adventurous for those of us who are fairly new to hiking, but the view once you get there is absolutely breathtaking! When you look up to see the waterfall there is a rainbow that shines ceaselessly as the water flows fearlessly over the bend – a sight that has the tendency to make you feel free and remind you that you are safe to go with the flow of life. As you breathe in the fresh air it’s almost as if the breeze clears away your excess thinking and allows you to be present in the moment and be One with everything around you. It’s a refreshing feeling that only the grounding energy of Nature can bring. Once we’ve taken in the serenity and beauty of this space, we’ll hike back up the hillside and then head to Downtown Sacramento and we’ll grab a bite to eat at Station 16. We’ll laugh and catch up on the latest and then if we’re not too full from the food & drinks we can head to my favorite spiritual store, “Sunlight Of The Spirit” and check out what new goodies they have. This place is always such a vibe – the atmosphere is peaceful and welcoming, the people are great and the store itself has everything you need for your spiritual journey regardless of your spiritual background. It is also the new home for thefeelgoodsoul Spiritual Bath Box (which I’m super excited about and so grateful for!) After enjoying the good energy of the store and picking up some new metaphysical tools we might head to one of the many beautiful parks in Natomas and enjoy the peaceful nighttime breeze while we stargaze and do some light stretching to show love and appreciation to our bodies for taking us through this amazing day!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my husband Samuel and our son Samuel II – or as I like to call them “my Sams”. I know the long nights are tough and the various unconventional modalities that I have used to heal myself have definitely taken some getting used to, but my husband has always been in my corner cheering me on, lovingly supporting me, and being my strength when I’m weary all while being an excellent father to our son. He often expresses how proud of me he is for the work that I’ve done on myself, but in all honesty without the extensive work that he has done on himself I would not be in the position to focus on myself and my healing the way that I do. Also, Sam is the most pure, loving, wise, amazing soul that I know and being with him has shown me how to be a better version of myself and for that I am so grateful! Also, our son is extremely patient and understanding. Although he is only 2, his heart and his wisdom is centuries old. I am learning so much about myself through him and I am so grateful to be his mother. He brings me an indescribable joy that can only be expressed in heartfelt hugs and sweet kisses. The warmth in my heart that I feel when I am with them is something that I never thought was possible in real life, but I am so happy to experience it with them in this way! I’d like to thank them both with every ounce of gratitude that I possess. Their love for me is a gift that I will cherish for many lifetimes to come – it fuels me up and keeps my cup overflowing!
