Meet B. Arlene | Poet & Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with B. Arlene and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi B. Arlene, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose a creative career, because I wanted to be my most authentic self. In being a poet, I get to do all of the things I love- from writing and performing poetry to developing art education programs for children and facilitating workshops focusing on Social Emotional Learning. Most importantly, I chose a creative career, because I believe everyone deserves to be heard. My career allows me to create spaces to assist people in finding their voice and building the courage to speak out and boldly tell their story.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is a pillar of authenticity: a bite into the black woman’s experience. What sets my art apart is my philosophy that everyone is a writer, but editing makes someone a poet. Being intentional in the editing process is integral for any work of art. I am most proud of the way my art uplifts Black women and offers a voice to tear down barriers within corporate workspaces. I got to where I am today by being true to myself. It wasn’t easy, but I overcame challenges by determining that I wouldn’t let anything stop me from accomplishing my dreams. I’ve learned that being flexible isn’t always a good thing. It is important to find a balance between what you can and cannot compromise. I want the world to know that everything I am, is a testament to having a solid plan and a disciplined work ethic.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is so much I would try and pack into a week-long visit. During they day we would visit Zora’s House (a non-profit co-working and community space built by and for women and gender expansive people of color), the King Arts Complex (an oasis for cultural and educational activities as well as community facility for special events), and the Columbus Museum of Art. We’d have lunch at East Market to enjoy some of my favorite foods, like the Soul Roll at Creole 2 Geux. Evenings would be the best part of the visit, because we’d go to the Blu Note to hear some live music and indulge in the delicious lamb chops. After that, we’d either go Hyer Hookah Lounge or Side Bar to close out the night.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to Gamal Brown. He has always believed in me. I would not be the artist that I am, if it were not for his faith, love, and unwavering support. He has been the best mentor and leader, but above those he has been a kind and dear friend.
