We had the good fortune of connecting with Bao Er Ho and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bao Er, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up as an introvert, I find myself expressing myself more artistically. It started with playing piano, small doodlings, dedicating an entire school book to manga drawings, and then later on painting and eventually animating. They helped me understand my feelings and I feel connected. I wish I could do the same by continuing this passion of mine in my animations!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am motivated by great movies and great acting. One of my favorite actors is James McAvoy! He has such amazing facial expressions and I always believe his character in any movie he is in. I aim to have my animations be like him – where they feel so alive and their acting so moving even though they are stylized characters. A moving performance needs to be enhanced with great cinematography and editing skills, which is where I think my previs experiences come in handy. I had the pleasure of working under great directors, cinematographers, and supervisors on movies like Ford V Ferrari (2019), Moonfall (2022), Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny (2023), and Nyad (2023) to name a few. I still have a long way to go and I hope to succeed one day!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love living in LA. The weather is always perfect and there are so many beautiful places and amazing restaurants. I would take them on one of my favorite pastimes- thrifting! There is a nice little street on East 3rd Street down at Long Beach with unique vintage stores, that range from vintage/well-preserved used clothing to beautiful vintage/refurbished furniture. It is an absolute gem. I also like to go around Melrose Avenue, they have a long street of interesting stores to shop at – lists include 2nd Street Melrose, Crossroads Trading, Wasteland, Buffalo Exchange and many more!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have always supported me, and I think they are owed a MASSIVE shoutout. They had always encouraged me to pursue something I love, I did not have the typical Asian children troupe of being forced to be a doctor or a lawyer – they had even agreed to financially support me until I was 90. They are my biggest inspiration and aspiration – I hope they will be proud of my achievements one day and that I can support them financially as they have been.
