We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbra Dillon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Barbra, can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As both a comic book publisher and a geek culture website, Fanbase Press aims to give voice to the themes, ideals, and people that make geekdom so exceptional. By providing a safe space and a platform for individuals to share their stories through a variety of entertainment mediums, we hope to move our community forward and to share the stories that will resonate with and impact readers, viewers, and listeners around the globe. We truly believe that stories matter, as they allow us to examine the essentials of human existence, to understand ourselves better and to grow and/or heal, to pass on importance values, morals, knowledge, and lessons to the next generation, and to connect with one another through empathy and compassion. Stories have always allowed us to communicate through truly universal means and continue to do so to this very day. While we wish that we could publish all of the incredible comics that are submitted to us throughout the year, we hope that by also providing promotional support for creators – through daily reviews, interviews, and our podcast network – that their voices are amplified, allowing new audiences to share their experiences.
Please tell us more about your work. How did you get to where you are today professionally. What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
If we have learned anything from the stories that we consume through comics, TV, movies, and beyond, no journey is without its obstacles. In many ways, Fanbase Press has always been a unique model, given its foundation as both a creator-owned publisher and a journalistic outlet. For that reason, we have endured uncertainty in needing to carve our own path and doubts by our peers that such a model could succeed. As is true of any endeavor, we have both succeeded and failed, but we are always willing to learn from our mistakes, to accept and welcome feedback, and to always seek to better ourselves, our products, and the content that we provide. Above all, we want the company to provide a safe space for creators, fans, and our team to be themselves, to share their stories, and to pursue opportunities that will allow them to be fulfilled. Ashley Eckstein, the founder of Her Universe, said, “I personally think it’s so dangerous to inhibit failure. Some of the most valuable lessons are learned from failure. The feeling of failure creates a necessary hunger to succeed.” I couldn’t agree more. Eckstein’s message serves as a reminder that we should all take to heart: It is okay not to be perfect, and it is okay to fail.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Having been born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, I have been fortunate to call Los Angeles home for the past 15 years. Over that time, I have found such a welcoming home in North Hollywood and love the artistic community that has thrived in the area. While these challenging times have prevented us from being able to frequent our favorite spots throughout the city, I will always recommend two restaurants to frequent in the Valley: Ernie’s Taco House and Vegetable.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In celebrating our 10th anniversary this year, Fanbase Press would not be what it is today but for all of the incredibly talented staff, contributors, and creators who have found a safe space in our community. We are immensely grateful for their tireless efforts in supporting other creators, sharing their own stories with readers, and fostering a positive environment for creativity and inclusivity.
