We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth Mounier and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Beth, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had a mentor who told me that as an assistant basketball coach, every thing that touches performance is our job to be informed on and begin to develop mastery in. If we truly want to unlock performance and unlock people, we have to seek out knowledge in related fields: psychology, neuro science, leadership and communication, skill acquisition, basketball techniques and concepts. The more I dug into each concept, the more I wanted to build out my own practice that could integrate everything I was learning with everything I was seeing day to day. In that pursuit of mastery, Mounshot was born.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think the biggest thing that separates me from other player development companies or trainers is how intentionally I integrate what I’ve learned about psychological safety, optimal challenge, optimizing learning with how I design sessions. It creates an environment the people want to keep coming back to! The thing I’m most proud of is the amount of athletes who aren’t just getting better at basketball, but are becoming more confident, trying new things, and recognizing versions of themselves they didn’t know they had in them.

It hasn’t been easy! Starting your own business comes with all the challenges you predict and then about 1,000 you didn’t. I think a lot of coaches get into training because they love teaching the sport, but there is a steep learning curve in becoming CEO, CFO, COO overnight. I’ve relied a lot on business mentors, family, and community support to get to where I am today.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Portland is such a fun city — especially if you love great food and great coffee! For brunch we’d have to go to Tin Shed, Screen Door, and Gigi’s. Coffee is Good Coffee every day (there are enough locations that we could try a new one each day and get to see a different part of town). You really can’t go wrong here, there are hikes, rivers, the coast when you want to be active and shows, live music, and events when you want to be entertained.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Heidi VanDerveer has been the most impactful people in my playing and professional career. From watching me play in high school to coaching me in college to helping me prepare for interviews and job opportunities today, she has been there every step of the way. She’s challenged me to grow, supported me when I fell short, and has used her network countless times to multiply my own. I wouldn’t be in any of the positions I’m in without her belief in me.
