We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth Rohde and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Beth, what is the most important factor behind your success?
This is an easy question to answer! Coast Music’s success comes from having the most extraordinary teaching staff. Every one of our music instructors has exceptional talent, and they are also great teachers. This combination is not easy to find, and we spend a lot of time and energy identifying those special individuals through our extensive interview process. We only invite the best to join our staff.

Additionally, we provide an enormous amount of support and resources to teachers. We share insight and ideas, and we all seem to like each other and love our jobs, our students and their families.

What should our readers know about your business?
Coast Music was founded in 2004. The first three teachers were me, my husband (Matt Rohde) and my sister (Marti Harris). I really had no clue as to how to run a business, and I never considered the particular difficulty in running a music school. The amount of time it took was staggering, and we had 2 young children at home. I really neglected my kids, home and marriage at that time. I feel very fortunate to have survived that time.

The financial investment was great as well, and it took years to get to the break even point. We didn’t let these challenges stop us, because we knew we had something very special to offer.

We worked hard to build a school where students would be able to apply what they learn in private lessons to real-world settings. We created goal-based education that would keep students engaged and inspired while mastering skills along the way. We produced an environment where students were working on music for recitals, band performances, rehearsals, evaluations, auditions, showcases, competitions and more.

Additionally, it was extraordinarily important to form a team of inspiring teachers with the same vision. We worked hard to find like-minded educators who were also working musicians in the industry with a great passion and gift for teaching.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in the South Bay, so I would definitely take my friend to the beach for a day or two. We would ride beach cruisers up to El Porto and stop for lunch at the Surf Food Stand. We’d play on the beach for awhile after lunch then head south to Manhattan Beach for a little shopping. We’d either eat at The Strand House, or Love and Salt or we’d head down to Hermosa to eat at Palmilla Cocina y Tequila. We might shop in Hermosa and enjoy people and pet watching and the sunset before returning our bikes an heading back our house. On another day, we’d go for a motorcycle rides (if my friend rides) around the cliffs of Palos Verdes, or we’d hike PV. We’d end up at Terranea at Nelsons or Bashi for food and drink.

I’d also make a point of taking my friend to the tourist spots of their choice which could include The Getty, Griffith Observatory, Descanso Gardens, Universal City or Universal Studios. My classical music loving friends might also enjoy seeing LA Opera, LA Master Chorale or LA Symphony. I would definitely take my jazz and fusion loving friends to the world famous Baked Potato. We’d see who is playing at other clubs around LA. I’d also be sure to take my friend to dinner at Olivetta in West Hollywood!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
