We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth the Bard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beth the Bard, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is critical in life and work because both are full of uncertainties. In entrepreneurialism, it also creates an addictive rush that can crush or push you. If you can handle the risk of failure, you’re good to go. Because you will fail many times before you succeed. If failure isn’t an option, then it’d be best to go work for someone else. Adaptability is one of the strongest markers of happiness and success in any a part of life or business.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My creative work is in the tabletop gaming industry. I’m a professional game master and designer. I’ve always been passionate about writing and blogging, which lends well to this work. As an adult, I tried Dungeons & Dragons with my kids for family game night. We were immediately hooked into the concept of collaborative storytelling and interactive fiction! From there, I created a best-selling companion supplement to a popular gaming module and then went on to creating my own module content from scratch. I’ve also created a course to teach others how to write tabletop adventures and live to guide others through the process of creating modules for their preferred systems!
It definitely wasn’t easy. The D&D space had been male-dominated for quite a while and much of the community is protective. I’ve had plenty of pushback from men that don’t like my feminist takes and contributions. But I’ve also had tons of support and my feminist Curse of Strahd rewrite is not only a bestseller but has also been nominated for awards!
The only way to make it in this industry, as with most, is pushing past your inevitable Impostor Syndrome. You have to demand your place and know your own worth, or you’ll get eaten alive.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends are all incredibly supportive of me in my work, life, and creativity. They’re my biggest cheerleaders and my harshest critics. (Which is a good thing!)
