We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Dickins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I created Fashion Yell as a passion project for my soul and sanity. I’ve been working in the fashion industry for 16 years in everything from Lingerie to denim. Whether I was doing design or production I was never making what I really wanted to wear. Art. You know I got into fashion because I was IN LOVE with fashion, and the jobs I got kind of made me fall out of love along the way. I started to forget why I followed this path in the first place. Things become technical and true design becomes irrelevant. You can’t be too fashion forward because you’ll lose customers so basic and boring will be your best seller. Everything must be mass produced or you won’t make any money. The fashion industry I was experiencing had so little to do with real fashion and was more just being in the apparel business. I just feel like if I am not making what I am truly passionate about I am failing.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Over my years of working in the fashion industry the environmental toll started to wear on my soul. You can ask any boss I’ve ever had. Every company I worked for I tried to make that company as eco friendly as possible, but there are some things you just cannot control. That is why my line is so special to me. Fashion Yell is an eco-friendly Los Angeles-based fashion company made of recycled materials. My goal is and will always be to produce as a little waste as possible. You can care about the planet and still look like a million bucks.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles is an amazing city because every type of person, place, thing, or event can be found here. Every neighborhood has its own culture and beauty. What I love about Los Angeles is that in every nook and cranny you can find art and something beautiful. I think there is an incredible free spirit about the city itself and I don’t know if I would be a fashion designer if I was born in any other place. The empty deserts, the wild forests, and the crashing beaches make a unique atmosphere. This is a city where you can be who you want to be, dress how you want to dress, and love who you want to love. And I am in love with that. With that said, my favorite thing in all of Los Angeles to do is the Sunday night bike parade in Venice Beach. There is a whole crew of people at sunset who ride all over the city with glow in the dark light up bikes blasting music, bubbles, having the time of their lives. Every time I participate in this activity I am filled with true joy and happiness.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My life has been the craziest journey and everyone I love and care about has jumped in with me. First of all I couldn’t do any of this without my parents. My parents are both logical and rational people who have a wild crazy free spirit artist as a daughter. Even though they wish I chose a life path with much more security, they have supported me every step of the way. And a huge shout out has to go to my Fashion Yell girls!!! I am so lucky to have such beautiful, amazing, kind, and wonderful friends. They have modeled for me for photographs and runway, done hair make up, and contributed along the way because they were passionate about it as well. There’s nothing more powerful than when an amazing group of women come together and work together to create something beautiful.
