We had the good fortune of connecting with Bharti Trivedi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bharti, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been a very creative person and you would always find me involved in learning one or the other artform or new skills like, painting, crafting, designing my home, decorating, fixing things around, sewing, crocheting, woodworking, etc. However, I didn’t think of pursuing art as a career especially as an Asian woman or even what goes into being an artist. I knew I had to make a practical decision with my career choice to ensure financial security. It was during motherhood that I actually had the chance to explore more about my hobbies and at that time, fiber art grabbed my attention- learning knotting and weaving techniques solidified my love for fiber art and I discovered my hidden passion and I couldn’t stop having a creative business with all things artistic. And from that day forth, followed by a series of fateful events, every step I took towards pursuing fiber art kept opening up more doors as if to say this is the path you were meant to be on. And I haven’t looked back since.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that an Artist’s journey is special and brings joy to many. It’s not been a nonchalant route for me; be it my journey from India to California or from being a cyber security engineer to home engineer. What gave wings to this venture – YASHI DESIGNS is my curiosity in art since childhood.

Creating art fulfills my soul and helps me find joy and peace that I have always been striving for. My deep connection to the outdoors was a precursor to my tactile love with natural fibers. I like to derive inspirations from natural elements & weave my sensory experiences in the wilderness into huge sculptures and textured wall hangings to bring the outside in. I aim for a timeless aesthetic so that the work can be appreciated for the years to come!

My work consists of pieces made up of natural sustainable fibers & unique creative techniques of manipulating them, drawing inspiration from the interplay of the materials and nature. Within my work, one may find the glimpse of nature being translated into its own language of rope, starting from tiny adorable pieces to huge artworks.
It is a difficult juggling game as a woman to manage a work passion and the rest of life—you will need all the support you can get. For me, I owe so much to my husband and the partnership we’ve forged to pursue my passion.

It was difficult initially to maintain the work-life balance as I used to get overwhelmed by the number of hats we had to wear being a solo entrepreneur and mom of young kids.

I always start the day with writing out a list of things I’d like to achieve. Seeing it on paper helps me wrap my mind around goals and also adjust if I’ve set my expectations on productivity too high or low.
I’ve been working this balance for a few years now, so it feels like I’m starting to find a predictable rhythm and productivity level. I’m excited to see where each year takes me!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot has to be sitting on the beach at sunset, listening to the sound of the waves. This sound instantly reduces stress.

We never tire of the gorgeous vistas that can be admired while cruising down the coastal drives around the bay area.

I usually like to visit Mount Tam when I want to do a hike. Besides backpacking and walking hikes, you can also go road cycling, horseback riding, and even hang-gliding in Mount Tam. Visiting Big Basin Redwoods State Park for waterfalls is also one of my favorite go-to spots.

Makers Market, San Jose is a great place to know local artisans and to get a lot of handmade unique gift options from pottery to fresh local produce.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My journey has been filled with its fair share of ups and downs, but I know that I wouldn’t have made it this far without the unwavering support of my dearest Husband who has witnessed my growth and stood by me through it all, pushing me to new heights and giving me the space and freedom to pursue my dreams. I am eternally grateful for his emotional and creative encouragement throughout the years. Also, I must give special thanks to my mom-dad who has been my pillar of strength. Their determined belief in me has been a constant source of inspiration and motivation.
