We had the good fortune of connecting with BHAVANA BANALA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi BHAVANA, what makes you happy? Why?
“Unleashing Happiness through Storytelling: A Filmmaker’s Ongoing Odyssey”
As a filmmaker, from India I would like to explore different cultures and I feel storytelling is not just an art; it’s a source of profound joy. It’s the process of weaving intricate tales that captivate, inspire, and evoke emotions. The power of storytelling lies in its ability to connect people across cultures and boundaries, touching the deepest recesses of the human heart. It’s the act of breathing life into characters, places, and moments, and it’s their driving force.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a filmmaker, my primary passion lies in the art of storytelling, especially through the exploration of diverse cultures. I find immense excitement in crafting movies that introduce fresh narratives and themes to a global audience. My journey towards filmmaking began with a unique trajectory. Initially, In my childhood I ventured into the world of arts and photography but I was on the cusp of joining medical school when I made a life-altering decision to follow my artistic dreams.
This pivotal moment led me to express my desire to be an artist to my mother, who supported my aspirations wholeheartedly. She helped me enroll in a Bachelor’s program in Fine Arts in Hyderabad, India. As I delved into the world of visual arts, I discovered my true calling as a filmmaker. During this time, I had the opportunity to create several short films and documentaries and work on various projects with my friends. However, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic marked a significant turning point in my journey.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, I made the bold decision to pursue a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in the United States. Initially, my parents were concerned about this decision, given the uncertainties of sending their daughter to a foreign country alone. However, I was determined to make my dream a reality and secured a visa. To finance my education, I took a loan, and with the unwavering support and encouragement of a dear friend, I found the confidence to embark on this new adventure.
The pace at which my journey unfolded was remarkable. After my graduation, financial crisis has started and I contemplated returning to India to continue my work in filmmaking. However, I realized that I need to push my limits yearned to further explore diverse cultures and create more documentaries. This decision proved to be pivotal, and my dedication paid off. One of my documentaries, titled “Chasing Dreams,” received the Audience Award in MYgration film festival Florida —an accolade that reinforced my resolve to persist, believe in myself, and continue to create meaningful films.
In conclusion, my journey is a testament to the power of determination, the unwavering support of loved ones, and the unrelenting pursuit of one’s dreams. It’s a reminder that, sometimes, the most extraordinary adventures begin with bold decisions and the belief that storytelling can change the world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
During my Masters,I’m fortunate to have a wonderfully diverse group of best friends who I’ve always encouraged to come and explore India with me. As someone from Hyderabad, a city renowned for its iconic dish, Biryani, and rich cultural heritage, I’m eager to introduce them to the unique and vibrant culture of my homeland.
When I share stories about my culture, my friends express genuine curiosity and excitement about experiencing it firsthand. They’re always keen to visit Hyderabad and explore the local tourist spots, each brimming with history and significance. As we stroll through the city’s streets, I aim to showcase the essence of Hyderabad, with its blend of tradition and modernity, and of course, the mouthwatering Biryani that has earned international acclaim.
But my ambition doesn’t stop at Hyderabad alone. I want to take my friends on a journey across various states of India, unveiling the multifaceted beauty of this diverse nation. India has transformed remarkably from what they might have heard or imagined, and I aspire to showcase the significant developments, whether it’s the bustling metropolises, the technological advancements, or the rich cultural tapestry that defines the country today.
Our adventures will include exploring local markets, where they can immerse themselves in the vibrant colors and textures of India, and perhaps indulge in shopping for traditional Indian dresses. I’d love to see them draped in elegant saris or adorned in ornate kurta-pajamas, embracing the culture in a truly immersive way.
Moreover, I’d ensure that my friends get a taste of India’s celebratory spirit by joining in the festivities of local festivals. From the joyous and colorful celebration of Holi to the glittering lamps and grandeur of Diwali, I want them to experience the sheer exuberance that characterizes these cultural events.
In essence, I’m determined to be their guide, opening the doors to India’s rich heritage, showcasing the country’s modern side, and offering a glimpse of the unforgettable experiences that await. With every step, my friends will discover the incredible diversity and enchanting stories that define this land, leaving them with a deep appreciation for the magic of India.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to express my deep appreciation to my friend, a passionate cinematographer, and my parents who unwaveringly supported my dreams. After completing my BFA in India, I took a pivotal step by pursuing a master’s in filmmaking. This decision marked a significant turning point in my life. I successfully completed my MFA in Film Making at Full Sail University in Florida. Subsequently, I embarked on the creation of several documentaries, one of which, “Chasing Dreams,” received the Audience Award. This recognition served as a powerful motivation to further explore and expand my creative horizons.
