Meet bianca de la garza | media personality & founder

We had the good fortune of connecting with bianca de la garza and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi bianca, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’m a naturally driven person. I started working at 13. I tend to always be in the ‘on’ mode. This is not a bad thing, in fact, it’s been a huge asset as I have energy to work long hours. I have the capacity to handle a lot of information and synthesize it quickly. Reaching a work life balance is well… work. You must constantly be making smart decisions to each day efficiently. For years, working my way up the corporate ladder, I had no free time. I didn’t mind, remember ‘on’ mode is my default. Now I’ve learned how to control the pace I move and operate in. Scheduling downtime and getting sleep is a priority. I use scheduling tools that streamline my projects and allow for efficient time management. I’m still working hard but I’m also working smart. At this point in my life I know when to say no. I don’t worry about missing out because I’m right where I need to be.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a classically trained journalist. I knew at a young age meeting people and learning their story and giving them a voice was my calling. I spent my 20’s working in newsrooms and in my late 30’s realized I had been at the frontlines of some of biggest stories of our time. This summer I was along the Texas Mexico border interviewing migrants crossing into the U.S. There is a very real humanitarian crisis happening which needs attention. That is the beauty of my news background, it gives me a chance to see humanity in so many different situations. I will never stop being a truth seeker or storyteller. I’m also busy launching a podcast called “Walking in Heels”. It’s highlighting inspirational woman and giving real life advice to our listeners. I am also launching a fitness app this year focused on getting people excited to own their health. I believe longevity and wellness must be accessible for everyone. I want to make it fun and empowering.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA has so much to offer! I would probably go to LACMA and hit a farmer’s market. There is gorgeous hiking and besides the famous Runyon Canyon, Griffith Park has some great options. We could get sushi on sunset at Sushiya or grab mexican at Petty Cash. For pasta Il Piccolino has this lemon pomegrante dish that is worth every calorie. Pace in Laurel Canyon is a cute hideaway. After dinner we can stop into the market above for essentials and some incense. For live jazz I would take them to Vibratos in beverly Glen Canyon, owned by the daughter of legend Herb Albert. My daughter and I like vintage shopping on Melrose. Getting away I love Santa Barbara and Joshua Tree both just special to see.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My spiritual growth has been strengthened over the past few years. I’ve learned I need to keep my faith and stand firm in any storm that may come. I really need to thank those who have been my prayer warriors in these times of uncertainly in the world. When I look for peace amid the chaos in the world I turn to the Holy Bible, read scripture and it brings me a calm that makes everything else fade into the background. I am able to center myself with Jesus, that is how everything comes into focus for me. I do hope everyone has their way of getting connected. It is truly vital while living in the world.
