We had the good fortune of connecting with Bin Gao and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My life has always been creative. I was a singer in china. And I have been dancing for many years. These are also why I am a designer now because of these experiences that made me feel like I wanted to explore more in different fields. It made me happy to sing and dance for people and myself. Same as when I design. It made me feel great to inspire people and help people around me with my gifts. I always feel satisfied by these moments that involve my art and creativity. So, why not? I’m happy!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been through a lot to get into the program I am in right now. I’m currently in the interaction design program at Santa Monica College, and it is a really competitive program. I’m fortunate that I got it. I also have been working for Santa Monica College as a designer. I have highly involved in Corsair redesign and SMC Go app redesign, winning two Appademy awards. I’m so proud. These experiences have been helping me become a better version of myself. And I will keep pushing myself to go even further in my career and life. I also have so many different lives inside of my life. I have to spend time dancing, and I spend time teaching dance, and I have to spend time taking the class and spend time designing. Life is hard, but you make it easier by doing what you love.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take her to nature. I would take her to all the nature I could go. I love the ocean. I love forests. I love mountains. I love nature. I would definitely take her to nature; I feel relaxed in nature. So, I would bring her camping? Maybe? If that’s allowed! Haha! But for a short hike, there is a forest in pasadena, los angeles. There are a lot of trees and a waterfalls. It’s just so lovely.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Boyfriend (maybe he is gone by the time this article is out. he is going to Japan for school, and he is leaving at the end of March.)is the person that convinced me to apply for the interaction design program. And I started taking design classes after that. I was also a nurse in China. After coming here, I was perusing nursing again, but I was not happy. My Boyfriend saw the unhappiness. And he also saw the creative side of me. He told me I should stop trying too hard and maybe try something that makes me happy. He had been convincing me for a long time and i finally decided to try. And I fell in love after I tried. He is always encouraging and supportive. Thanks to him, I found the design and am happy doing it.
