We had the good fortune of connecting with Black Magic Tim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Black Magic Tim, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initiating my own business was not initially my primary objective; rather, it evolved organically as a means of forging a unique trajectory aligned with my aspirations. Despite possessing specialized talents in cinematography, visual effects, and editing, I encountered challenges in securing positions that fully recognized and utilized these skills within existing companies. This propelled me towards the realization that I needed to proactively create opportunities tailored to my expertise.

As a forward-thinking visionary in the realm of visual storytelling, my artistic style is characterized by a futuristic approach that seeks to push boundaries and redefine conventional norms. This distinctive aesthetic perspective not only sets me apart in a competitive industry but also serves as a cornerstone for my brand identity.

Being a team of one person, I’ve cultivated a versatile skill set that allows me to handle diverse aspects of project execution—from conceptualization to post-production—with a high degree of proficiency and artistic integrity. This self-reliance has empowered me to maintain creative control over my work while ensuring that my artistic vision remains uncompromised.

While my passion lies predominantly in the artistic aspects of my craft, such as cinematography and visual effects, I recognized the importance of cultivating managerial and entrepreneurial skills to support and sustain my artistic pursuits. Consequently, the act of building a business around my unique skill set and visionary approach became an extension of my creative expression—a sophisticated art project, if you will.

In essence, my decision to start a business was driven by a combination of necessity, the desire for artistic autonomy, and a futuristic vision that guides my creative endeavors. By embracing my role as a one-person team and leveraging my distinctive artistic style, I aim to navigate the entrepreneurial landscape with innovation, resilience, and a commitment to excellence. This journey allows me to focus on honing my craft while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in visual storytelling.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others in the filmmaking industry is my unique blend of creativity, adaptability, and forward-thinking vision. My artistic style is deeply influenced by sci-fi anime from the 1980s, which has shaped my distinctive cyber aesthetic. This, combined with my ability to serve as a versatile one-person team, enables me to offer a holistic approach to filmmaking that sets me apart in a competitive landscape.

I’m most proud of my resilience and ability to adapt to changing circumstances and technologies throughout my career. From my early days showcasing Japanese Animation at Howard University to navigating the transition from film to digital production, I’ve consistently embraced challenges as opportunities for growth and innovation.

Getting to where I am today professionally has been far from easy. In 1988, during my first year as a film student at Howard University, I began by showcasing Japanese Animation to fellow filmmakers, sparking conversations and igniting interest in our innovative approach to filmmaking. Despite the initial lack of financial returns, this endeavor laid the foundation for my career and introduced me to like-minded artists.

Together with my team of fellow film students—Eric Mclain, Tony Starnes, and Kimathi Innis—we invested in professional equipment, purchased a 16mm Bolex Camera, and started offering affordable productions in 16mm and 35mm film to local music video artists. This led to the formation of Black Magic Cinemaworks and put me in the limelight as a go-to filmmaker, working with prominent artists and labels like Blackground Records and Tommyboy.

However, the advent of DV/HDV and affordable digital cameras around 2000 disrupted my niche, forcing me to adapt to lower budgets and increased competition. Despite these challenges, I diversified my skill set to include visual effects, post-production, and directing, becoming a jack of all trades to stay relevant in a rapidly changing industry.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of perseverance and staying true to one’s vision, even when faced with adversity. Embracing failure as a learning opportunity, investing in continuous learning, and maintaining a solutions-oriented mindset have been instrumental in overcoming challenges and achieving success.

My journey took another turn when I was introduced to Nollywood through Koby Maxwell, a Ghanaian music artist, who invited me to elevate the quality of Nollywood films. Over seven years, we produced several impactful films that helped introduce Nollywood to a wider audience, although financial rewards were still insufficient to sustain my career.

Frustrated but determined to stay relevant, I shifted my focus to emerging technologies, rebranding my company, Cyberstorm Digital: Advanced Visual Technologies. Embracing a futuristic vision, I invested in cutting-edge equipment, including a mobile command center and advanced steadicam system, positioning myself as a forward-thinking filmmaker.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 became a defining moment for me. While others retreated, I embraced the opportunity to provide remote video services and streaming solutions, leveraging my mobile command center and advanced technology to meet the growing demand. This preparedness met opportunity, leading to a threefold increase in profits from 2021 to 2023, finally making up for decades of financial struggles.

Today, in 2024, I find myself with more contracts, resources, and opportunities than ever before. I’ve begun exploring Embodied AI robot cinematography and AR/VR, further expanding my horizons. While everyone’s journey is unique, my story underscores the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and belief in oneself. Through my work and story, I aim to inspire others to pursue their passions with unwavering dedication, embrace change as an opportunity for growth, and strive to make a lasting impact in their respective fields.
